Obituary

Johnnie Lavell Bilbrey, Jr., 83, of Pensacola, FL passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, surrounded by his family who adored him.

He grew up in Andrews, TX and always considered himself a Texan no matter where he lived. A cowboy at heart, his collection of boots, the Longhorns, enchiladas, and Willie Nelson were always topics of conversation.

He worked in the oil fields as a young man which encouraged him to attend the University of Texas on a swimming scholarship and then Texas Christian University where he received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology. Doc B, as he was known throughout his professional career, was a compassionate psychologist and a man of high moral character and integrity. He dedicated his life in service of others and often handed out cards that read "Hope Spoken Here" during his 33 years overseeing the behavioral health services at Lakeview Center. It was a source of pride that the chapel at the Lakeview Center was named in his honor upon his retirement. He continued his work as a consulting psychologist at Northview Community Center. He also spent many years volunteering at The Leaning Post Ranch, a therapeutic equestrian center for individuals with disabilities and at-risk youth.

John was an accomplished photographer, a published author of over 40 scientific papers, adjunct professor at the University of West Florida, and amateur pilot.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lavell and Norma Bilbrey, and his brother, Ronnie.

He leaves a loving legacy for his family, his wife of 40 years Pam, his children Ross (Christine), Ty (Sandra) and Jenna (Tim). His grandchildren, Claire, Chloe, Logan, and Cate were a special joy.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00pm on Monday, March 3, 2025, at Sanders Beach Community Center.

In lieu of flowers, please honor John by bringing hope and love to a person in need through a deliberate act of kindness.
