Obituary

Johnnie Whitehead Strawbridge, age 96, of Pensacola, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 16, 2023. Johnnie was born on April 23, 1927, in DeFuniak Springs, FL to the late Jessie and Polly Jones Whitehead. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, James "Jim" R. Strawbridge, her siblings, Mary Ellen Edwards, Margaret McBride, Billy Gene Whitehead, and her nephew, Harmon McBride, Jr.

Johnnie was a loving wife, sister, and aunt. She was a long-standing member of East Hill Baptist Church, now Hillcrest Baptist Church. She moved to Pensacola in July, 1944 after graduating from Walton High School to work for Gulf Power, where she was employed for more than 40 years. She married the love of her life James R. Strawbridge on August 9, 1945.

Upon retirement from Gulf Power, she and Jim enjoyed traveling for over thirty years in their four different motor homes. They traveled to the lower 48 states and Alaska. They were charter members of the Gulf Coast Chapter of FMCA. Jim was a part of the WWII Marine Raiders and they made many trips to those conferences where they would see his Marine buddies.

Those left to cherish her memory include her brother, Devon Whitehead, of Aliquippa, PA; many nieces and nephews, Kahl (Pat) Edwards, DeFuniak Springs, FL, Ellen (Mick) Edwards Milo, Pensacola, FL, Mary Kaye (Scott) Edwards Bell, Pensacola, FL, John (Susan) Edwards, Birmingham, AL, Carol McBride Richardson, Las Vegas, NV, Linda Whitehead Searight, Panama City, FL, Harry (Patty) Whitehead, Montville, OH, David Whitehead, Charleroi, PA, Gene (Brenda) Whitehead, Bellair, FL; fourteen great nieces and nephews; twenty-eight great-great nieces and nephews; and there are four great-great nieces and nephews expected in early 2024.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Summer Vista Assisted Living Facility, Vitas Hospice and Primary Care House Calls for the loving care shown to Johnnie.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM on Monday, October 30, 2023, at Harper Morris Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 PM at Barrancas National Cemetery, with Rev. Mike Mashburn officiating. Procession to the cemetery will depart Harper Morris Memorial Chapel at 12:30 PM on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Leisure Timers at First Baptist Church, or Backpack Buddies at First Baptist Church, both at 500 N. Palafox St., Pensacola, FL 32501.
