IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph Douglas
Slater
November 2, 1924 – February 5, 2019
Joseph Slater was born on a Tennessee farm in 1924, and passed away this week. Joe was a quiet but founding member of the Greatest Generation, joining the Navy at 17, fighting gallantly in WWII's European and Pacific theaters, and in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Joe retired after 30 years in the US Navy, a Master Chief Petty Officer. That was the life he loved the most. He went on to graduate from the University of West Florida and joined an engineering consulting firm as Board Member and Chief Operating Officer.
Joe married his English war bride Georgina in 1948, recently celebrating their 70 th wedding anniversary. They were blessed with three children: Elizabeth, Richard, and Charlie, but Joe was most proud of his three grandsons: Joseph, Michael, and Forbes.
Joe was diverse enough to have voted for both Jimmy Carter and Donald Trump, and he was strong enough to admit both were errors in judgment. He will probably best be known for the things he was quietest about: helping people in small and large ways. His family caught him at this often, but we know we missed many of his warm deeds. We would therefore ask, in lieu of flowers or donations, that his friends and family undertake a quiet act of kindness for someone in need.
