Obituary

Joy Y. Barrineau, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, after a sudden onset of brain cancer.

She was born in Macon, Georgia on December 21, 1936 to Comer and Clarice Youmans.

Joy grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Bass High School in 1955 where she was an accomplished swimmer, majorette and winner of the Betty Crocker Homemakers of Tomorrow Scholarship for the state of Georgia.  She attended the University of Georgia where she became a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and later transferred to Emory University where she met her future husband William Leroy Barrineau Jr (Bill).

Bill and Joy were married in 1957 and moved to Bill's hometown of Pensacola, Florida. Joy quickly made Pensacola her home and sought out ways to become involved in the community.  This included various volunteer positions in the Junior League of Pensacola, First United Methodist Church, Baptist Hospital, Cordova Park Elementary, and many other organizations.

Joy was known to have a passion for tennis and was often found on the court or glued to the tv during a major tournament.  Her family, however, was her greatest passion. The love of her life Bill, four children and six grandchildren (who called her "Oy") were everything to her.  In Oy's words "When they're happy, I'm happy."

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Comer Youmans and Clarice Ellington; her brother Dr. Roger Youmans; and her husband Bill.

Joy is survived by her four children, Lee Barrineau of Atlanta, GA, Bob Barrineau of Decatur, GA, David Barrineau (Marc) of Brooklyn, NY and Julie Krehely (Donald) of Pensacola, FL; six grandchildren, Mac (Yami), Myles, Jake, Hope Storey, Will and Libby; as well as nieces, nephews and countless friends.

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, Pensacola, Florida.  A private family memorial service will be held in her honor.

The family would like to thank the medical teams at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital and Covenant Care Hospice for your love and support in her final days.
