Obituary

Joyce Dannheisser passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 21, 2023.

Born on Feb. 5, 1932, in St. Louis, MO, she lived most of her life in Pensacola married for 68 years to her treasured husband, Dr. Bertram V. Dannheisser, before his passing in 2020.

Although she was small in stature, she was certainly not so in personality. Joyce was known by all as tremendously beautiful inside and out. Even in her 90s, she was known throughout Pensacola as the beautiful woman with the amazing high heels.

As a child, Joyce loved to dance, sing, play piano, and enjoy summer camp at Camp Chicagami. She was accomplished in sewing, needlework, and crocheting. A beautiful girl, courted by many, at 19 years old her heart fell to a dashing dental student attending Washington University in St. Louis - who a year later would become her husband. Once married, and with instruction from her New Orleanian mother-in-law, Freida, Joyce became an excellent cook whose gumbo and tacos were renowned by her family and friends.

Joyce loved bird watching and traveling with Bert and close friends, Charles and Betty Kahn.

As bright as she was beautiful, upon raising her children Joyce returned to college to complete her undergraduate degree, was nominated to receive a Rhodes Scholarship, and earned a Master's Degree in Childhood Special Education. She had a passion for helping learning disabled children and worked as a learning disability specialist at Beggs Elementary School and UWF. In addition to her love for children, Joyce also had a special fondness for animals — choosing to raise "rescue" animals - including Annie, Maggie, and Sweetie (an adopted rescue from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina)

Her greatest pride was in raising her three boys into successful men and loving fathers and grandfathers. When grandchildren came along, Joyce finally got her girls. She loved to let her granddaughters play dress up with her ballerina toe shoes and wedding gown and to include them on outings for her regular manicure. Joyce wanted her granddaughters to feel like princesses, and they did. She loved her grandsons and granddaughters and was so proud of their accomplishments.

Joyce was blessed with seven great-grandchildren who loved her dearly. Their "GiGi" always made sure they were treated with stuffed animals, dress-up clothes, and learning toys every time she saw them.

Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, Bert; her parents, Victor and Helen Schulein; as well as her granddaughter, Nicole Dannheisser.

She is survived by her children and their wives, Dan and Debbie Dannheisser of Sarasota, Tom and Karen Dannheisser of Pensacola, and Matt and Tammy Dannheisser of Gulf Breeze; her six grandchildren and their spouses, Laura and Joe Young (Pensacola), Leah and Ben Fishbein (Gulf Breeze), Jana and Matt Sloan (Houston), Matt Dannheisser (Tampa), Josh Dannheisser (Sarasota), and Sam Dannheisser (Sarasota); as well as great grandchildren, Lucy and Julianna Young, Amelia and Ava Fishbein, Jacob and Charlie Sloan, and Indie Jolie. Equally important to Joyce was her daughter-in-love and dear friend, Kim Jernigan.
