Joyce Webb Nobles, 99, native of Pensacola, FL went home to be with her Lord on Friday, January 17, 2025.
Joyce Webb Nobles was born in Pensacola, FL on September 11, 1925, to Dr. Carol C. Webb and Eulalie Hutchinson. She attended Pensacola High School, graduating in 1943, then Vanderbilt University, and the University of Tennessee, graduating with a Batchelor of Science degree in Nursing. After graduation, Joyce returned to Pensacola to work for the Escambia County School Board as a county-wide travelling nurse. In addition, she taught Obstetrics at the old Sacred Heart Hospital on 12th Avenue.
In 1950, she married the late William D. Nobles, Jr. In 1962, after her husband suffered a heart attack, she went to work at the Pensacola Loan and Savings Bank where she learned the banking business and was ultimately made president, retiring in 2002. She was the first female bank president in the State of Florida and served as president for over 21 years. She also served as Chairman of the Board of Horizon Bank of Florida.
In 1935, as a 10-year-old child, Joyce dedicated the first trestle bridge over the railroad tracks on Cervantes Street. Seventy years later in 2005, she was again privileged to dedicate the new trestle bridge on Cervantes Street, having it named in her honor.
Joyce loved golf, tennis, boating, and all things water related, but she was truly devoted to her family and her church, where she taught the Mary-Martha Adult Sunday School class for over 50 years. She also served on the Administrative Board and Finance Committee of the church.
She served as treasurer and board member of the Interfaith Jail Ministry, board member of the West Florida Hospital, and President of The Medical Education and Research Foundation. Joyce served with the Escambia County Banker's Association and the board of the Pensacola Chamber of Commerce. She also served with the Salvation Army, Pensacola Junior College Foundation, and on Mayor Whibb's Revenue Task Force (Collier Commission).
She was honored with the 1980 Rose Award from the League of Women Voters and in 1982 was awarded "Woman of the Year" by the Intown Business Women's Association. Joyce was a life-long member of the Pensacola Yacht Club where her father was Commodore in 1927 and at age 99, was their longest-tenured member. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Pensacola and a past member of the Pensacola Country Club, Merrymakers and Harlequins carnival organizations.
Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, William Daniel Nobles, Jr.; her father, Carol Castor Webb; mother, Eulalie Hutchinson (Webb); sister, Carol Webb Pou, and great-granddaughter, Delia Nobles.
Joyce is survived by her three sons, William (Karen), John (Molly), David (Melissa Jenkins), and daughter, Linda Nobles (David Jester). Joyce was blessed with eight grandchildren, Stephanie Byrne (Robert), William Nobles, IV (Erin), Robert Nobles (Emilie), Patrick Nobles (Evelin), Ryan Wiggins (Jonathan), Whitney George (Christian), Meredith McIver (Tal), and Michelle Davitt (Chris). She was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren, Savannah and Tyler Byrne, Liam and Madeline Nobles, Bailey Nobles, Elliott and Asher Wiggins, Parker George, Webb McIver and Elisabeth Davitt.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Private interment will be at Roberts Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gadsden Street United Methodist Church in Pensacola.
The family would like to thank her caregivers, LeKisha Harris, Marcia Williams, Marcia Lee, Costilla Woods, and Ramona Barnes for their excellent care in her final years.
