IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Julia Pearl
Fairchild
November 7, 1920 – August 27, 2017
Julia Pearl Printz arrived on November 7, 1920 to Alfred and Freida Campbell Printz on their small working farm in the Shenandoah Valley town of Luray, VA. She peacefully departed on August 27, 2017 in Gulf Breeze, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; as well as her one sibling, Jean Price.
Julia grew up in the Depression and had only an outhouse, water from an outdoor pump, a wood stove for cooking and heat, and a mule and wagon. However, she was surrounded by animals, the natural beauty of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, had plenty of chores, and a father who sat on the porch swing in the evening and sang to his two girls.
Julia was baptized at age 10 at the Luray Baptist Church. After high school, she left the farm to start nursing school in Washington D.C. She got a ride with an uncle, but had no place to stay and had not known to apply to the school. A kind Dean and a phone call to her high school principal secured a spot.
Her nursing school graduation coincided with the onset of World War II. Julia became a Navy Nurse Corps officer and was assigned to the Naval Academy Hospital and later the Long Beach Navy Hospital. She developed a life-long love and respect for all sailors and marines as a result of her work.
Julia met and married a returning Army Medical Corps Officer after the war. Dr. John Phillip Fairchild and "Judy" traveled and raised 6 children in their 33 years of military service. After that, they "retired" by providing pediatric care in Appalachia, KY to the underserved. They moved from the family home in Maryland, 11 years ago, to be near relatives in Gulf Breeze, FL.
Julia will be greatly missed by her many friends and staff at The Watermark and by her family, including her children, Jean (George) de Tarnowsky of Amelia Island, FL, John (Beverly) of Knoxville, MD, Jackie (Jay) Auxt of Thurmont, MD, Jim (Karan) of Philomath, OR, Paul (Judy) of Gulf Breeze, FL, and Jeffrey (Sarah) of Bellingham, WA. She was also blessed with 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Privately Julia will be placed at Barrancas National Cemetery with her beloved husband, "Phil".
Her life was one of devoted selfless and loving service to her family, her patients, and to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
