Obituary

Juliette C. Coulter, 94, passed away peacefully at her home in Pensacola, FL on Saturday, May 5, 2018.

Julie, the youngest of five children, was born to Eliza (DaSilva) and Joseph Chansky on December 31, 1923 on Puunene Plantation, Maui, Territory of Hawaii. In her teens, she moved to Honolulu where she found work and lived with her oldest sister. There she met and married Joseph S. Coulter, a Second Lieutenant in the US Army, on December 31, 1941. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor; she had watched the December 7th attack on the naval base from her sister's front yard.

Julie and Joseph were married for 46 years and raised four daughters, relocating to posts in the US and abroad as Joe pursued his military career and advanced to the rank of Colonel. In retirement, the couple made their home in Alexandria, VA. Interestingly, Julie was headed home from an early morning shopping trip and, being less than a mile away, witnessed the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon.

Julie was an accomplished homemaker, an enthusiastic cook and baker. She doted on babies - her own, her grandchildren, and her great-grands. Her gift for story-telling entranced the youngsters, and she'd happily spend hours with them at play. As the grandkids grew, Julie took up sewing and stitched up costumes that only added to the fun of their times together.

In her spare time, Julie bred and showed Persian cats, but she loved nothing more than tending her garden. She won the City of Alexandria's Beautification Award three years running and was always eager to visit with passers-by who admired her work and asked for advice on their own gardens.

Wherever the family moved, Julie carried her love of Hawaii in her heart and in song. She had a lovely voice and would strum her ukulele as she sang through a repertoire of Island melodies.

Julie, a life-long Catholic, is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and three siblings.

She is survived by her sister, Hilda Grilho; her daughters, Sharon Gibb (Bill Sloan), Candy Hanson (Mike Crane), Toni Harr (Gary), and Jill Coulter; five grandchildren, Alice Gibb (Larry MacPhee), Julia Gibb (Jeff Huntington), James Hanson, Joseph (Lauren) MacKenzie, Laura Adkison, and Jesse Scales; as well as five great-grandchildren, Carson and Thomas MacPhee, Cecilia Adkison, and Ruby and Lila MacKenzie.
