Obituary

June Louise Smith Butler of Pensacola passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2012 in Baton Rouge, LA. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, James C. Butler. They had shared a deep and loving marriage of 32 years. During those years of marriage while Jim was in the Air Force, they were permitted to travel extensively throughout the United States and overseas. While stationed in England, she attended Cambridge University. Also preceding Mrs. Butler in death were her parents, H. Wilbur Lyle and Emily R. Smith; her two sisters, Marylyle P. Johnson of Minneapolis, MN and Eleanor Lee Smith of Linesville, PA; three brothers, T. Rankin Smith of Birmingham, AL, R. Hugh Smith of Linesville, PA and David L. Smith. June always considered herself very lucky because she still has a loving and caring sister, Abigail Emily (David) Jones of Owasso, OK. June always has been so very proud of her daughters, Susan Emily Butler of Pensacola, FL and Rebecca (Becky) Eleanor Butler Gammon (Stephen H.) of Baton Rouge, LA. She has 3 wonderful grandsons whom she adored: Alec Butler Breaud, Cole McLean Gammon and Maxwell Jameson Tench Gammon. They have been the loves of her life, and they loved her deeply in return. Her family was joined several years ago by a beautiful granddaughter-in-law, Amber Brown Breaud. She is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews as well as 14 cousins. She is also survived by her very special friend of over 45 years, Irmi Nashold of Munich, Germany. June was educated in the elementary and secondary schools in Linesville, PA. She continued her formal education by obtaining her BA degree at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL. She graduated with a double major in Latin and Spanish and a minor in Library Science. After teaching for several years Mrs. Butler continued her education. She was an avid University of Florida Gator fan and received her upper degrees of MA plus enough hours to be acclaimed as having a doctorate minus her dissertation. She has been a long time standing Alumni of the University of Florida. In addition she has been a member of local, state, and national education associations as well as the same for foreign language groups. She was an active member and participant of Northminster Presbyterian Church. She was also a social member of Alpha Delta Pi as well as held memberships in Daughters if the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. But above all, she totally loved her teaching experiences and the students she taught. Although June loved Pensacola very much, she made the decision to live in Baton Rouge for the last four years, so she could be closer to her grandsons, the lights of her life. She lived at Southside Gardens Assisted Living and was very well taken care of. The family wants to heartfully thank Nanas very special friends and caregivers Rita from Pensacola and the entire staff at Southside Gardens. They all gave her a lot of love, encouragement and humor. The family rejoices in the fact that Nana went on a one week Caribbean cruise with her niece, Mary Emily, before her surgery. She had a fabulous time. In honor of her memory and love of the color red, guests are invited to wear something red. She would love this! In lieu of floral arrangements, she requested voluntary donations to Northminster Presbyterian Church in Pensacola. Visitation will be held 9:30am until the Funeral Service to begin at 10:30am Friday, June 8, 2012 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
