Obituary

Karl Winston Boyles, Jr., 78, of Pensacola, Florida, died on April 14, 2022.

Born in 1943 in Birmingham, Alabama, Karl graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1961 as both a Merit Scholarship Finalist and a Varsity Basketball player. He attended the University of Virginia as a DuPont Scholar, graduating with a BA in Economics from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1965 and UVa's School of Law in 1968. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. In addition, he received a Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Alabama in 1983. Karl worked for the Gulf Power Company, serving as Director of Employee Relations and Governmental Affairs, before moving into the private practice of law in 1983 with an emphasis on Corporate Law, Taxation, and Estate Planning. He and his son, Joe, practiced together at Boyles & Boyles until his retirement in 2020. Karl was an active Rotarian for almost 40 years as a founding member and past President of the Five Flags Rotary Club of Pensacola where he was also a proud Paul Harris Fellow. He served many years as an adjunct Professor at the University of West Florida and Pensacola Junior College. He served 12 years on the Santa Rosa Island Authority – four years as Chairman, and seven years as Vice-Chairman – where he was instrumental in kicking off the revitalization of Pensacola Beach. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Florida Bar Association, Escambia Santa Rosa Bar Association and Alabama Bar Association. He was also a Director of Synovus Bank Pensacola, J. W. Cannon Farms, Inc. and the Pensacola Sports Association Foundation. He has been President of Rebellaires and Saints and Sinners and a Director of the Order of Tristan. With his wife Nancy by his side, he enjoyed social events as a Fiesta of Five Flags knight, weekend trips with dear friends as a founding member of the Baylen Street Social Club, and beach days closer to home with the unofficial White Island Basking and Social Club. Karl so loved his adopted hometown of Pensacola where he resided since 1969 and regaled in telling his children and grandchildren stories of its successes and growth over the many years he lived here (the revival of the brown pelican population being a family favorite). His ever-present good humor and sharp wit was often put to use by all the organizations he belonged to as a willing comedic writer for their tableau skits. His love of golf was right behind his love of family as he enjoyed playing some of the best courses in the world and travelling with friends to support the Walker Cup team. He was the very best "go-fer" when it came to any household project (he coined the term "creative incompetence" to get out of most DIY jobs); he had a life-long sweet tooth and knew where to find the best pastries or ice cream in any town; he also loved good coffee and bad wine; and he mastered the art of sneaking out of church after communion to make a Sunday tee time where he delighted in wearing some of the snazziest golf pants ever seen.

Karl is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Cannon Boyles, his brother, Walter, and his parents, Elizabeth and Winston. He is survived by his four children, Deborah Della Rosa (Brian) of Moorestown, NJ; Karl Winston "Win" Boyles, III, of Pensacola; Joseph Boyles (Laura) of Pensacola; and William Boyles (Dana) of New Orleans; his eight grandchildren Sofia, Cannon, Michael Winston, Sarah, Matilda, Bill, Oliver, and Violet; his dear partner of recent years, Colleen Rogers; and his many friends.
