Kathryn Kent Miller, 94, died peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2026.

Known as an intelligent and kind friend to many, Kathryn will be greatly missed by family and neighbors.

Born on March 22, 1932, Kathryn grew up in Jay, FL where her parents owned the local general store, which is how Kathryn learned the value of hard work and thrift. She became an adept seamstress, to dress in the latest fashions, and went on to graduate from Florida State University in 1954, on a full scholarship, to become a home economics teacher. She never had a problem finding jobs as she and her husband Joseph moved around the country to follow his profession. She taught in numerous states including Florida, North Carolina, California and Illinois, where she retired. Along the way she also ran five cafeterias for Bell Telephone in New Jersey, where this southern girl was exposed to new foods like bagels and lasagna, and worked as a hospital dietician. After retiring from teaching, Kathryn obtained a degree in interior design, a lifelong interest, and helped many friends and family create lovely homes around the country.

An excellent hostess, Kathryn was always surrounded by a lively community of friends no matter where she lived. And she moved frequently early in her marriage as promotions developed quickly for Joseph. The evolution of house prices over the years was a clear lesson in inflation. Their first house, purchased in the late ‘50s, was $17,000. A house they purchased, in what later became Silicon Valley, for $36,000 in the mid-60s is now valued at $4 million. After spending many years in the suburbs of Chicago and early retirement in Flat Rock, NC, Kathy and her husband moved to Pensacola when Kathy spotted her ideal house while out on a walk visiting her brother, where she has happily resided for the last 18 years of her life. She has had a lifelong love of reading, travel, politics and bridge, which kept her mind sharp. She was never short of an opinion, and ready to spread her knowledge to all as a lifelong teacher. After a steady stream of dogs, she enjoyed her last years with the neighbors’ cat coming over daily for an afternoon nap on her lap as they watched Fox News together.

Though there were upsets along the way, Kathryn was pleased with the life she lived and felt blessed. She always reasoned her way through decisions, and was well guided by her innate honesty, diligence and intelligence. She evolved in her beliefs over time. Brought up as a Baptist, she became a Presbyterian after marriage, as she didn’t want to bring her children up in fear of God, and in Pensacola found a home at Christ-Church Episcopal Church.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Joseph Morris Miller (11/1/32 - 10/28/21); her parents, Julian Percy Kent and Ruby Cofield Kent; and brothers, Rex, Lonnie and Robert.

Survivors include her children, Margo Leslie Miller and Kent Joseph Miller; one grandchild, Sarah Kathryn Miller; and a sister, Elizabeth Kent.

Kathryn’s memorial service will be held 1:00pm Friday, November 6, 2026, at Christ Episcopal Church, on Palafox Street in Pensacola.
