Obituary

Kendall Lewis Roose "Rooster", 67, long time surf legend of the Pensacola community, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. Kendall was born and raised in Pensacola and was a graduate of Pensacola High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from The University of West Florida and a Masters from Webster University. He worked for the Navy Training Command for 37 years as an Education and Human Performance Specialist. He was known as a stellar surfer and devoted his life to the surfing community. He owned one of the first surf shops in Pensacola, the Greg Noll Surf Shop located in Gulf Breeze, which he sold to his longtime friend Yancy Spencer. It later took on several names; Blue Cheer, New Era, and finally Innerlight Surf Shop. He was a member of one of the first Pensacola surf teams created by the legendary big wave rider Greg Noll. Other teams included: Allen, Innerlight, and most current team Waterboyz.

Kendall surfed competitively in the East, Gulf, and West Coast Surfing Associations.

He designed his own longboard, "The Rooster" model, for gulf coast surfers, which continues as one of the finest designs ever made.

One of his loves was teaching children and adults alike. Whether it was softball, soccer, surfing or fishing he had a passion for teaching. He also loved the wonders and joys of nature that God created.

He loved his family dearly, especially his two daughters and six grand boys, always active and attentive to their needs and activities.

Survivors include his loving partner, Rachael Detoro; daughters, Tonya Duke (Dave) and Deanna Lepa (Jeff); mother of Tonya and Deanna, Sandra Buck; sister, Sandra Ames (Bob); brothers, Charlie Roose (Brenda), Stanley Roose and Jimmy Roose; and grandchildren, Dagan, Logan, Spencer, Parker, Tristan and Torrin.

There will be a Celebration of Life event called "The Paddle Out", 2:00pm October 15, 2017 at Navarre Beach Pier. Commemorations and blessings will be made for Kendall on the beach and a paddle out into the water will follow.
