Obituary

Kenneth "Doc" Edwin Gulledge, CAPT, USN (ret.), 94, of Pensacola, FL died 4 February 2013. He was born in Dalark, AR to the late Luckett Evans Gulledge and Leota Smith Gulledge, but grew up in Shreveport, LA, and Dallas, TX where he graduated from high school in 1934. In 1938 he graduated co-valedictorian from Henderson State Teachers College, Arkadelphia, AR with a B.S. in math and physics. He received his Congressional appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1938 and graduated with distinction (33rd in class) in December 1941 with the wartime accelerated class of 1942. It was at the Naval Academy that he acquired the nickname Doc. He served during the war on a U.S. Atlantic fleet destroyer (USS Bainbridge DD 246). In 1944 he completed flight training and was designated Naval Aviator at Pensacola, FL. Some of his postings were: CO, Heavy Attack Squadron TWO, Whidbey Island, Wash.; Operations Officer and XO, USS Midway (attack carrier) based in the Pacific; Joint Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Wash. D.C.; CO, Fleet Intelligence Center, Pearl Harbor; U.S. Defense and Naval Attaché, U.S. Embassy, Singapore. His last duty station was CO, Naval Reserve Center, Gadsden, AL. He retired in 1972. He married Mildred (Mimi) Virginia Hathcoat of Harrison, AR in 1945. Former schoolmates at Henderson State, their romance bloomed when Mimi, a DoD employee, became reacquainted with Doc while he was in flight training. They shared 67 loving years together until her death in 2012. They relished the variety of locales and diversions afforded them as a military family while serving their country. They shared many good memories and made lifetime friendships. Doc was an avid golfer, a great bridge player, and was very handy around the house. He rebuilt the engine of his 1953 MG TF. He could, and was happy to, fix just about anything. He and Mimi traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe after retirement. He taught himself to read French and became proficient in the language. He is preceded in death by his brothers William Dixon Gulledge, Luckett Evans Gulledge, Jr., and a sister Elizabeth Gulledge Nordin. Survivors include a son Mark Gulledge (Judy) of Orlando, FL, and a daughter Tracy Gulledge of Pensacola, FL, along with nephews and nieces. A military burial with honors will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery on 1 March 2013 at 1:15 pm.
