IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Kevin David
Slattery
December 16, 1954 – March 4, 2017
Kevin David Slattery, 62, of Pensacola, FL, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017.
Kevin was born in Shreveport, LA and raised in the rich traditions of his large, Irish-Catholic family in New Orleans. He attended Holy Name of Jesus Elementary and De La Salle High School, playing football and baseball throughout his youth. He continued his education at LSU and Loyola Universities before moving to Pensacola where he earned his MA in Psychology at the University of West Florida.
Kevin and Lindsey met at work early in their careers, and married in 1985. Marriage bliss soon included parenthood, a most sacred "calling," which Kevin embraced with his whole heart and soul.
Kevin was a Professor at Pensacola State College where he counseled and taught young men and women for 31 years. Often throughout the years, past students would recognize the last name and ask, "Any relation to Mr. Slattery from PSC?" Huge smiles and personal stories about unique ways Kevin had helped them would follow, along with, "Mr. Slattery was the best teacher ever…!" He loved teaching his own children and students; he gave his all to both.
Kevin lived an authentic life. He had strong opinions and convictions, but spoke his truths gently and listened to others. He never judged others; Kevin sought to understand and respect all people.
Kevin faced every day with purpose and passion. He valued and nurtured his strength of spirit throughout his life playing guitar, creating great music, practicing meditation and yoga, living a healthy lifestyle, and loving his students, family, and God. Kevin was a die-hard Saints fan and raised all his children to love the Saints in good times and bad; he never wore a brown bag over his head. Kevin strived to be happy and keep peace with others and with his own soul.
Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, George Patrick Slattery and Pattie Slattery Burke, as well as his stepfather, John Patrick Burke and brother-cousin, Bob Parks.
Survivors include the wife he cherished, Lindsey, and the greatest joys of his life, David, Daniel, Rebecca, Joseph, and Danielle. He is also survived by his brother, Patrick Slattery, brother-cousin, Bill Parks (Michele), Cheryl Friberg, special aunt, Donna Ferrell, and patriarch, Uncle Bill Slattery, as well as loving in-laws, Jim Goodson, Tippie Goodson, and Jennifer Hill. In addition, Kevin leaves many very dear cousins, nieces, nephews, and family members who he loved deeply.
Kevin's willful fight and his doctors' and therapists' extraordinary care were nothing short of heroic.
We will celebrate Kevin's life at 5:30 pm, Friday, March 17, 2017 in the Perry Home at First United Methodist Church, Pensacola. A reception of food and fellowship will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Kevin by bringing peace or love to a person in need through a deliberate act of service.
