Obituary

Laurence Clyde Scott Jr. was born in Sacred Heart Hospital on August 3, 1933, and he died in Sacred Heart Hospital on November 4, 2017.   He was born to Peggy and Laurence Scott and delivered by close family friend Dr. W.C. Payne, Senior. Laurence, or Larry as he became known, enjoyed a wonderful life, devoted to God, his family and his community.

Larry attended local schools and as a youngster developed a life-long love of sports. At Pensacola High School he was captain of the baseball, basketball and football teams, he was named All-State, All-Southern Region, and PHS' first Wigwam Wiseman All American. In later years he was inducted into the PHS alumni Hall of Fame. He earned a full scholarship to play football at the University of Florida, where he lettered all four years and served as co-captain in his senior year. He was in Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and inducted into Florida Blue Key. He graduated cum laude with a degree in engineering. In later years he received a Masters degree from the Indiana University Graduate School of Business.

In 1956, he moved back to Pensacola as an engineer with Chemstrand, but soon he was off to serve in the Air Force Corps of Engineers. Later he served in Special Services, by the General's order, as coach of the Air force football team. When he returned to Pensacola he headed in a new direction and began a successful career in banking at Mutual Federal Savings and Loan, which is now Regions Bank.

Through his many years he was a visible community leader, chairing many important local and regional causes, including the Escambia County United Way, the March of Dimes, the Rotary Club and the Pensacola Sports Association. He was Chamber of Commerce Business Leader of the Year, recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow, the Pensacola Sports Association's Sportsman of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee and the Rotary Club's legendary "Mr. Sunshine." Of special importance to him was his award for donating blood regularly throughout his entire adult life.

He was equally devoted to St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, where he served in all capacities from Sunday school teacher to Senior Warden. On the regional level he served the Gulf Coast diocese as treasurer for two terms, and chairman of the finance and standing committees.

In retirement he devoted all of his free time to his church, his children and especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jane Mitchell Scott; his lucky and devoted daughters, Patty Scott Lowrey (Jack) and Sarah Scott Ellyson (Scott); and his even luckier grandchildren, Laurence Scott Lowrey, Sarah Grace Lowrey, and Casey Jane Ellyson.
