Obituary

Lieutenant Commander Raymond Walter Myers, USN (Ret.), 95, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023, and entered glory.

Ray is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Mary Elizabeth Myers and his brother, Walter Myers. He is also survived by his three children from his first marriage of 34 years to Nadine Peevy Myers, Scott Myers (wife, Aloma), Lynne Short (husband, Frank), Robin Clay (husband, Robert), and Howard Davis, Mary's son. Ray had the privilege of enjoying nine grandchildren, Jared Busch, Christine Lambertson, Jason Myers, Kevin Short, Sarah Pouliot, Emma Persson, Alex Short, Hannah Gerz and Anna Short.  He also enjoyed his eleven great grandchildren, Gunnar Senn, Cooper Senn, Izzy Pouliot, Josiah Pouliot, Easton Senn, Colton Busch, Connor Persson, Ian Persson, Alaina Persson, Tony Myers, and Henry Raymond Gerz.

Born in Philadelphia, PA and raised there, the Myers moved to Doylestown for Ray to attend High school. He was drafted into the Navy in 1945 at the close of WWII and was sent to Duke University to receive his Associate's and was commissioned as a Naval Officer in 1947. He went on to Pensacola, FL for flight training. Upon receiving his wings of gold, he was stationed in Japan to support the Korean War from 1950-1952. Ray was transferred to California in 1952 and then on to Pensacola, FL as a flight instructor from 1953-1955. From Pensacola, he went back to Duke University to complete a Bachelor's' degree in History. Following graduation, he was stationed in Norfolk, VA from 1959-1961. During this tour he piloted a PBM5 seaplane that made an emergency landing with a world record setting 550-mile taxi to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  This path was directly across the infamous Bermuda Triangle. He wrote a published article (https://thebrownshoes.org/story/ray-myers) about this harrowing ordeal. Willow Grove, PA was the next duty station from 1961-1964 and on to Okinawa, Japan from 1964-1966 in support of the Vietnam war. He finally retired from his last station assignment in Pensacola, FL from 1966-1970. Raymond was a member of McIlwain Memorial Presbyterian Church for 57 years and served as an elder 50 years. He also volunteered as an adult Sunday School teacher for many years. Ray loved golf, reading, and listening to Big Band and Jazz. He will be remembered by his grandchildren for being a butler at tea parties, telling sea stories, organizing their rooms, and teaching them to cook (and his special chocolate chip waffles!). He was always ready for a theological or historical discussion. Ray leaves behind precious memories and will be sorely missed by those who loved him but are rejoicing with his Savior in heaven. He lived a long and full life and considered himself blessed indeed.
