Leonardo Cruz, Pensacola resident and long-time coach at Pensacola Catholic High, was born on March 11, 1959 and died June 5, 2014, doing what he loved, crabbing in his boat near Perdido Key. He loved the small-town feel of his home in Pensacola and was a daily patron of Triggers Restaurant. He is survived by his wife, Susan Cruz; 4 children, Adam Valle, Ann-Marie Valle, Dominique "Nikki" Cruz and Alexis Cruz. Coach Cruz touched the hearts of many students, fellow coaches and teachers at Catholic High. One of his students, and later fellow coach, had this to say: "You were more then just a coach to me-- you were one of my closest friends. This is why I do what I do." Coach Cruz set the bar both personally and professionally as a wonderful, kind guiding force for the youth in his community. He graduated from Venice High School in 1977, studied at the University of Florida and later graduated from Florida Southern University and was an avid Gator fan, golfer and fisherman. Visitation will be held Monday, June 9, 2014 5:00-7:00pm at the Harper Morris Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. He will be buried in his hometown of Venice, FL. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Coach Cruz to Pensacola Catholic High School, 3043 W. Scott St., Pensacola, FL 32505.
