IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leroy
Chambers
December 15, 1934 – July 18, 2016
LeRoy Chambers, 81, was a man who loved adventure. Born to parents Roy Chambers and Rovena Archer in Strong City, OK on December 15, 1934, perhaps his first taste of true adventure came at the age of five when he would take his beloved pony and ride all day until nightfall every chance he got. LeRoy's adventures continued during his school years when he quarterbacked his high school football team, won medals in track, and even managed to get a second hand motorcycle all the way to Coeur d'Alene, ID to earn some summer money in the mines there. After college he joined the Navy to see the world and fly planes. He began in Maryland in Test Pilot School. From there, he flew the legendary A-6 Intruder on many dangerous missions over Vietnam. He went on to command his own squadron, VT-23 in Texas. From flying he went to command on deck, becoming the Air Officer on the USS Lexington. His final stop was at the Pentagon. Even finding his partner for life was an adventure. After a failed engagement to a Middle Eastern princess, he found his true love, Patricia Louise Farnell, on shore leave in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He spotted the lovely alto of the Farnell Sisters singing quartet across the room at a dance, walked straight through the crowd to her, and made her his for life. After serving his country in an exemplary career as an officer, including medals and commendations, LeRoy retired with the rank of Captain and settled down in Pensacola, FL. There he trained new pilots on flight simulators, negotiated collective bargaining agreements, helped Pat with her Real Estate business, played tennis, refereed soccer games and raced catamarans, with a side trip to Africa to visit his eldest son in the Peace Corps in Botswana.
In his golden years, LeRoy was generous with his time, hands, and expertise in helping his children and their spouses, Wade Michael Chambers (Kendall Cox), April Leah Parrish (Chris) and Ryan Roy Chambers (Susan) with the beginnings of their own families. In addition to his wife and children, LeRoy is survived by sisters, Janet Gregory and Annette Waters of Tulsa, OK and grandchildren, Caleb, Lesedi, Xavier and Ione.
