Lillian Stanford Sykes, a resident of Pensacola, FL, and previously a longtime resident of Birmingham, AL, died Saturday, August 23, 2014. She was 88 years old. Mrs. Sykes was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and she always placed the well-being of her family above her own. She was an avid reader and life-long learner who enjoyed sharing interesting information with others. Mrs. Sykes was a graduate of Demopolis High School and she attended Auburn University. Following a brief career with Garlock in Birmingham, she devoted her life to raising her children. Mrs. Sykes was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church while in Birmingham, and she was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Pensacola. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James Bryan Sykes, Sr. Survivors include her sons, James Bryan Sykes, Jr. and David Gregory Sykes (Judy); and three grandsons. The family will receive friends at 10:30am until the Graveside Service to begin at 11:00am Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Bayview Memorial Park with Rev. Frank Beall officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mrs. Sykes' name may be made to The Learning Tree, P.O. Box 1306, Semmes, AL 36575. This organization has provided valuable educational services to Mrs. Sykes' grandson and many other children and adults with autism.
