Linda Mercer Gray, 80, of Pensacola, FL., passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
There was always music. From the time she was a child, skipping down the sidewalks of Goldsboro, North Carolina to the stage of Hill Hall at UNC-Chapel Hill to the sanctuary of Christ Episcopal Church in Pensacola, Florida and up until she took her last breath.
Art was simply a way of life. Before the engines of the moving truck could cool, she found a church home, joined the choir, and started exploring ways to expand the presence of art in her new home of Pensacola. She worked as a volunteer to restore the historic Saenger Theater, performed with the Pensacola Opera, participated in growing the music series at Christ Church, hosted visiting musicians, and sang a final goodbye to many friends and fellow parishioners. The Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival is perhaps her greatest legacy. Created in 1973, it has grown to become a spectacular celebration of art, music, youth arts education, and community.
Linda Mercer Gray played many roles in her 80 years. On the stage she was Mabel, Little Mary Sunshine, Yum-Yum, Amahl, Zerlina, Santuzza, The Countess, Amahl’s Mother and numerous others. But her most cherished roles were that of Wife to Downing, her husband of 40 years, Mother to Meredith, and Grandmother to Judith and Sydney.
It’s funny how the heart works. You make room for a few and that muscle just keeps getting larger. There are so many precious friends who found room in that space. Linda took great joy in hosting gatherings with her husband in the home that they shared on the bay. Whether you were in cocktail attire during the holidays or in shorts at a mullet fry over the summer months, you would inevitably find yourself drawn (perhaps occasionally dragged) to the side of the piano to make music with others.
Linda is survived by her loving husband, Downing Gray; daughter Meredith Larson (Robert); step-daughters, Katrina McCullough (Scott) and Kimberly Tucci (Michael); step-son, Lockwood Gray (Shannon), and sisters Bettie Easley and Carolyn Grant (Cliff). She leaves behind 11 fiercely adored grandchildren, Emma, Liam, Ali, Mallory, Charlotte, Gray, Ellis, Judith, Sophia, Sydney, and Olivia and 3 perfect great-grandchildren, Grace, Max, and Tate.
We will gather to celebrate her life on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at 10:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church. And of course, there will be music.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Music at Christ Church Concert Series.
