Lois Elaine Shumate, 82, of Meridian, MS passed away Saturday, June 1, 2024.
Lois was born in Swink, OK on August 2, 1941, to Oscar and Opal Evatt. She was married in California to R. Marshall Rigsby for 15 years and had 2 children, Joy R. Hodges and Bobby Rigsby. She moved with her two children in 1974 to Oklahoma and then to Meridian, MS where she married Edwin E. Shumate. They had a "Brady Bunch" of kids together. She worked very hard all her life. Lois was involved in starting a machine shop with her husband in California in the 60's and helping her son start a shop in Mississippi. She worked in an assembly line, a sawmill, became manager at Taco Bell, and ultimately received her Brokers License and was a successful real estate broker while a resident of Mississippi. Throughout her life she would buy and sell over 30 houses that she would fix up and flip from California to Oklahoma to Mississippi. Hobbies included the love of camping and fishing, shooting pool, bowling, and going to the casino to play the slot machines. She enjoyed playing Yahtzee with her grandchildren and playing cards with her daughter and son in law.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Marshall Rigsby and Edwin Shumate; sister, Shirley Palmer; as well as her granddaughter, Kasey Brooke Rigsby.
Survivors include her daughter, Joy R. Hodges (Greg); son, Robert "Bobby" M. Rigsby (Anita); grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Memorial and Celebration of Life will be held 4:00pm Saturday, June 22, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in the Columbarium Courtyard. A reception dinner will follow at: 105 Sabine Dr., Pensacola Beach, FL 32561.
In lieu of flowers, the Hodges family requests donations be made to First United Methodist Church, Pensacola in memory of Karen McLeod.
The family would like to give special thanks to Vitas Healthcare for caring for Lois for the past 3 plus years and the amazing people at Specialty Health and Rehabilitation for taking extraordinary care of her during the past 5 months.
