Louise Ward Greenley, 99, a citizen of the world, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, in Statesboro, GA. She was born in Norfolk, VA on March 25, 1924. Louise was a loving mother and devoted wife.
Louise, known for her adventurous spirit, traveled the world with her family and embraced every opportunity for new experiences. Whenever faced with challenging living conditions, she maintained a positive outlook. She appreciated the beauty and cultures of every place she called home, whether it be in the Andes Mountains, an island in the South Pacific, the edge of the Sahara Desert, or beside a tidal creek of Chesapeake Bay. Her vibrant personality, generosity, and ability to connect with others made her the perfect hostess, and her infectious smile brought joy to all who knew her.
She was a talented teacher: high school biology, kindergarten music, physical education at Sweet Briar College, swimming, and tennis. She was the valedictorian of her high school class at the age of sixteen and a proud graduate of The College of William and Mary at the age of nineteen.
Louise was a charter member of the Pensacola Beach Community Church and a past president of the Pensacola Beach Optimist Club. Her faith in God was an integral part of her life, guiding her actions and providing comfort to many in her determination to serve her Lord.
Louise also enjoyed playing the piano, tennis, basketball, sailing, camping, and watching sports of all kinds. She also had a talent for handwork, creating beautiful heirlooms with her skilled hands.
She is preceded in death by two beloved husbands, Ellis Johnson, Jr. and John "Jack" Greenley; her parents; three sisters, Ida Hawkins, Antha Ponton, and Marianne Deaton; as well as her son, Robert C. Greenley.
Louise leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. She is survived by her sons, John and Jim; daughter, Kathy; nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
