Obituary

Lucile Halstead Mayo passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at her place of residence in Cumming, Georgia. She succumbed to complications after a nearly three year battle associated with leukemia. Lucile Mayo was born March 1, 1925 in Summerville, SC. She was the daughter of William Talmadge Halstead and Mary Louvenia Lister Mayo. She made her profession of faith at six years of age and was baptized by her father at Camilla Baptist Church. In 1932 her family moved to Lake City, FL. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1942 and from there went to Stetson University where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1946. She married James Lawrence Mayo, Jr. in December of 1944. After a short separation due to his service in the Army in the Pacific theater, she followed him as he attended The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. She was a faithful, industrious, and helpful wife as he served in several pastorates in Kentucky (Union Grove Baptist 1947-1949 and Belmont Baptist (1949-1952); North Carolina (Smithfield First Baptist Church, 1952-1960); and Florida (Warrington Baptist Church (1960-1980); First Baptist Church of Cutler Ridge in the Miami area, (1980-1990). She was a member of First Baptist Church, Pensacola and served in the music ministry there until 2009. It was also there that she was involved with the Samaritan Hands Ministry. Leaving Pensacola, she moved in 2009 to reside with eldest son in Cumming, GA. She was active as a world-class soprano soloist all her life. She performed with Stetson Symphony, received acclaim as soloist singing the "Messiah" with the Louisville Orchestra. She served as soloist and in the music ministries of each church she attended. She is survived by her husband, James Lawrence Mayo: her three sons, Lawrence William Mayo, Wallace Halstead Mayo and David Lister Mayo; and four grandchildren, Abby Mayo, Brittany Mayo, Ryan Mayo and Stephen Mayo. Visitation will held at Harper Morris Memorial Chapel, Sunday, January 30, 2011 from 2:00-4:00pm. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 31, 2011 at 11:00am at Pleitz Chapel located at First Baptist Church, Pensacola. Burial follows at Bayview Memorial Park HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
