Marcus Brown Martin, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on April 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, leaving behind a life defined by service, dedication, and deep love for those closest to him.
Born on November 24, 1936, in Covington County, Alabama, he later moved with his family to Pensacola. At just 17 years old, he answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Navy. He proudly served during the Korean War aboard the USS Arikara from March 1954 to October 1957. During his time in the Navy, he traveled to ports of call in Hawaii, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines—experiences he would later share through stories that family members always enjoyed hearing.
Following his military service, Marcus built a long and steady career. He worked for the City of Pensacola for over 13 years and later continued his service with ECUA for more than 19 years. He was known as a dependable and hardworking man who took pride in providing for his family and doing his job with integrity.
Marcus found joy in the simple things in life, especially in the moments spent with family, cherishing family gatherings when his children and grandchildren would visit. He enjoyed puttering in the yard, taking pride in the small things that made a house feel like home. You could often find him sitting in his recliner in the sunroom, watching the birds and squirrels play just outside the window, or enjoying his favorite western movies and television shows. These quiet, everyday moments reflected who he was—a man content with the simple life, grounded, and deeply appreciative of the people and things around him.
Marcus was preceded in death by his parents, Mattie Lee Martin and Leon Homer Martin; his brothers, Talmadge Martin, Calvin P. Martin, Marvin R. Martin, and James R. Martin; his sister, Mildred Lombard; and his granddaughter, Sarah Beth Martin.
He is survived by his best friend, the love of his life, and his wife of more than 68 years, Barbara (Earnest) Martin; his sons, Marcus Martin, Jr. and Leon Martin (Nicole); his grandchildren, Ryan Martin (Jessica), Kelly Martin, Alex Martin, Andrew Murphy, and Spencer Murphy; his great-granddaughter, Kayleigh Rae Fish; and a host of extended family and friends who will continue to carry his memory forward.
Marcus will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, someone who didn’t seek recognition, but instead showed his love through his actions, his work ethic, and his steady presence. His life was not about grand displays, but about consistency, loyalty, and devotion to those he loved. That is the legacy he leaves behind.
