Obituary

Margaret Gamble Cockman, 91, took her beautiful smile to heaven on Thursday where she met her Maker and was reunited with her recently deceased husband of 70 years. She leaves behind family and friends who dearly miss her, but they have wonderful memories and the faith that they will see that smile again. Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Jan Davis (Jim) of Charleston, SC and Beverly Patteson (Jim) of Pensacola. She had three grandchildren, Scott Hunter, Emily Hunter, both of SC, and Brittany Williams (Dave) of Atlanta and one great-granddaughter, Lindsay Hunter. She has one surviving sister, Marie Staley of Greensboro, NC, as well as two nieces, Joan Giordano and Tammy Coldsnow and one nephew, Paul Goble, Jr. Born on October 26, 1922, Margaret lived in Guilford County, NC, with her parents Flora and Everett Gamble. She lived on their farm with her two sisters until she attended Guilford College. There she met her true love, Norman Cockman. They married during the war, and Margaret followed his stations as a flight instructor in the Naval Air Corps. This past February, Margaret and Norman celebrated seventy years of marriage. A dedicated educator, Mrs. Cockman taught elementary grades for over forty years. Her students were blessed with her loving kindness in North Carolina, Virginia, and in Pensacola where she taught third and fourth grades at Scenic Heights Elementary. There the PTA awarded her a lifetime membership for her dedicated years of service. She retired in 1984 in order to devote time to her grandchildren, who loved her dearly. Margaret served her Lord faithfully throughout her life as a wife, mother, and Christian example for others. Her daughters and Sunday school students still quote her many expressions of Christian guidance. More recently, she belonged to Trinity Presbyterian Church in Pensacola. Professionally, she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary educational fraternity. Her family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Franklin Fleischhauer, who kept her sweet heart pumping as long as it could. Also helping her live a full life were the caregivers at Wesley Haven Villa and her two special sitters, Delores Rudolph and Tiwanna Smith. Deep appreciation goes to Mike Chapell and John Griffin of Regency Hospice for their loving care during her last days. Funeral services will be held at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 27, 2014 with visitation at 2:00 P.M. Margaret will be laid to rest beside Norman on Friday in Greensboro, NC. In lieu of flowers and because of her love of children, contributions may be made in Margaret's memory to Trinity Presbyterian Church, Christian Education Fund, 3400 Bayou Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32503.
