Obituary

Margaret Densmore James, age 80, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 28, 2020, having never met a stranger. Her trademark smile and gregarious personality were a blessing to every person who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind her beloved husband, William "Don" James, and her two daughters, Elizabeth Leigh James (of Charlotte) and Dr. Susan Densmore James (of Gulf Breeze) and a much-loved granddaughter, Elena Elizabeth Hynes (of Gulf Breeze).  She also leaves behind many of her Phi Mu Sisters and a host of family and friends. The world will miss her radiant light, infectious smile and ability to make the people around her find humor, even in the worst of situations.

Margaret was born on April 30, 1940, in Bessemer, Alabama, to Donald D'Arcy and Elizabeth Barner Densmore. She had one brother, Donald D'Arcy Densmore, Jr. "Pete" (deceased). An honor student her entire school career, Margaret attended The University of Alabama on a full scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting at a time when only two women were enrolled in Alabama's Business Department. She was awarded many education honors, one being recognized as a Who's Who of American Students and was a talented musician who played the clarinet in her school band and the piano at her church.  She married her husband Don in 1962, and they immediately began their great adventure as a Navy couple, moving many times during Don's 21-year-career, and finally they settled in Gulf Breeze.

At the end of her life, Margaret would more than likely want you to know her work here is done, as she successfully remained married 58 years, owned her own accounting business, was a faithful follower of the Lord, and raised two successful women, whom she affectionately called "my girls." She loved her only granddaughter Elena with her whole heart, and she also loved singing (albeit off-key) with her First Baptist of Pensacola Family.  No one would deny that she was one of the most avid sports fans on the planet, as she quite literally would watch any sport on television, but she held a special place in her heart for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Bear Bryant is surely shepherding her into heaven with a big "Roll Tide!"

Margaret will be buried at Barrancas Cemetery on January 6, 2021. In light of the unusual health climate, the family will be led by family friend Dr. James Callaway in honoring Margaret's life and legacy, and they invite all of her friends and extended family to celebrate by remembering the significant impact she had on all of us (or even just shout out a ROLL TIDE for her!). In memory of Margaret's giving spirit and due to COVID restrictions, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Samaritan Hands (https://fbcp.org/samaritan-hands-ministry/), the American Cancer Society, or The Susan G. Komen Fund.

Finally, the family wants to extend their sincerest thanks to Azalea Trace and the many health care professionals who provided excellent care for Margaret.  You are heroes.
