Margaret Elizabeth Whitmire Burks, age 92, of Pensacola, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 22, 2018, after a long battle with dementia. She was born the fourth of five children to the late James Buford and Mary Ingram Whitmire, on March 14, 1926 in Decatur, Alabama. Margaret married her high school sweet heart and husband of 59 years, the late Douglas Edward Burks, in 1946 when he returned to Decatur from World War II. They later moved to Pensacola, Florida in the early 1950s, where together with Doug's brothers and their wives, they established Big 10 Tires. While raising her daughters she was an active member of the community, especially the First Baptist Church of Pensacola. During her lifetime she was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, friend, and perhaps her most enjoyed title of grandmother. Whether she was traveling with her grandchildren or swimming with them in the pool, she was always at her happiest when her grandchildren were happy. Margaret spent her last years under the wonderful care of the staff at Azalea Trace. She is preceded in death by her husband and her parents. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Mary Lou Lurton (Dr. Jack W. Lurton, Jr.) and Ann Copenhaver; grandchildren, Jack Walter Lurton III (Courtney), Douglas Edward Lurton (Lindsay), Lawrence Luther Copenhaver, IV and Elizabeth Copenhaver Walker (Forrest); great-grandchildren Spencer Jackson Lurton, Brooks Walker Lurton, Caroline Abigail Lurton, Noah Thomas Walker, Wesley Douglas Lurton and Avery Elizabeth Walker; and many nieces, nephews and cherished friends. A celebration reception will be from 5:00 – 7:00pm, Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 2487 Tronjo Terrace, Pensacola, FL 32503. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
