Obituary

Margaret Eleanor York Easterlin, 66, of Pensacola, Florida passed away peacefully on August 21, 2020 due to complications from ovarian cancer.

She was born in Rome, Georgia on February 21, 1954, the daughter of Gus and Margaret York of Shannon, Georgia.

Eleanor moved in early life with her family to Athens, Georgia where she attended Alps Road Elementary School. Eleanor's family later lived in Macon, Georgia and they moved to Waycross, Georgia in 1968. Eleanor and her brothers Bill and Jim all attended Waycross High School. Eleanor loved dogs, and she earned an animal health degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Tifton, Georgia; she was also a graduate of Kennesaw College, Kennesaw, Georgia where she earned a degree in nursing. She worked at a Vet Clinic in Metairie, Louisiana and later worked as a nurse at Kennestone Hospital north of Atlanta.

Eleanor met her husband, Mark McCalla Easterlin, while he was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany in 1986. They married in November 1988 at historic First Presbyterian Church, Marietta, Georgia. Mark and Eleanor travelled the world together at their various US Navy postings before retiring to Pensacola, Florida. Their first tour together was at Naval Station Rota, Spain, where their son Andrew York Easterlin was born in 1989. Their second son, Richard Patterson Easterlin, was born in 1992 at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland. Eleanor served as an Ombudsman at several Navy Commands.

Eleanor was a dedicated mother first and foremost. Her strong Christian faith was the pillar which undergirded her family life. Her qualities of heart and character attracted friends from all walks of life. She and Mark served the Pensacola Community for 16 years at the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen as volunteers from First Presbyterian Church of Pensacola. She served First Presbyterian Church Pensacola for years as well, teaching Vacation Bible School, supporting mission trips and Habitat for Humanity construction, and participating in hurricane relief work in storm-damaged areas.

Eleanor is preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Margaret Brandenburg York, formerly of Waycross, Georgia, and by an older brother, William Marion "Bill" York of Cobb County, Georgia.

Eleanor is survived by her spouse, Mark Easterlin, and by her two sons, Andrew York Easterlin of Pensacola, and Richard Patterson Easterlin, of Tampa, Florida and his wife Kelsey Easterlin, and by a younger brother, James "Jim" York of Bainbridge, Georgia and his wife Theresa York. She is survived as well by several nieces and nephews.

Eleanor Easterlin will be interred at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida in a private service. A public celebration of her life will be scheduled when in-person worship is resumed at First Presbyterian Church Pensacola.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to United Ministries of Pensacola, an organization that primarily serves families with dependent children who are at risk of homelessness.
