Obituary

Margo Koelling Painter, a cherished resident of Lillian, AL, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2023, at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. Born on March 26, 1952, in Des Plaines, IL, Margo was 71 years young. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and love for her family and Auburn football as well as a deep affection for animals.

Margo was a remarkable woman who embodied the true spirit of giving. A beloved mother, grandmother, and friend to many, her willingness to lend a helping hand was infectious and left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know her. Her unwavering dedication to her loved ones was a testament to her selfless nature.

Raised in Perdido Beach, AL, alongside her mother, father, grandmother, and sister, Margo's upbringing laid the foundation for her caring and compassionate demeanor. Margo would literally give the shirt off her back to those in need. She put everyone in front of herself, and anyone who knew her would agree. We will miss listening to her passionately root for her Auburn Tigers. At one point, Margo had four dogs and three cats in a relatively small home, because she found it impossible to say no to a stray animal. Margo's journey led her to Foley High School and eventually to Auburn University, where her love for Auburn football flourished. She majored in Political Science and minored in History, all while enriching the lives of her family, friends, and colleagues.

Margo's career in real estate spanned four decades, during which she made an indelible impact, selling greater than one thousand homes. Her excellence in sales led her to be the top real estate agent in Kansas City for three consecutive years. However, her professional success never deterred her from her mission of aiding others, and Margo's giving spirit knew no bounds. She demonstrated this through her intensive involvement with her family, her close-knit circle of friends, her tireless support of colleagues, and her compassion for animals, which she adored dearly.

One of the most precious people and memories in her lifetime was of her granddaughter, Fallon Kay Painter, whom she was only privileged to have in her life for three brief years before Fallon's untimely passing. She was blessed with another grandson five years after Fallon's passing - James Hawkins Painter - and cited the two grandchildren as the greatest gifts of her life.

Margo's life was marked by her deep spirituality and devotion to the Christ Episcopal Church. Her faith provided her with strength and guidance, shaping her into the remarkable woman she became.

Survived by her son, James S. Painter, III, daughter-in-law, Ashley Painter; and grandson, James Hawkins Painter, Margo's light is also carried forward by her sister, Cheryl Skinner and her husband, Stephen Zullo, as well as Samantha Skinner and her husband, Evan Faulkner and son, Bryan Skinner. Additionally, she is fondly remembered by Victor Carr, Jan and Fred Brereton, Warren and Katie Harbison, Ross and Lindsey Brereton, and Jason and Corrie Pepperman; as well as the Koelling family Derrick Cox and Ruphina Smiley.

Although Heaven has welcomed a new Angel, Margo's absence is deeply felt by those left behind on Earth. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her legacy of selflessness, love, and affection for animals will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
