Marie Thompson Gossman died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, in Williamsburg, Virginia. She was born on August 26, 1920, in Columbus, Georgia. Marie was born on the day that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution became law, giving women the right to vote. She spent most of her years in Pensacola, Florida, after a twenty-two year career as a Navy spouse. Her husband of 53 years, Cdr. Thomas J. Gossman, USN, predeceased her in 2002 in Pensacola. Marie spent her early years in Pensacola and graduated from Pensacola High school in 1938. She traveled extensively in her career as a Navy wife, setting up households to raise her six children in 15 states and the UK, and eventually retiring in Pensacola. She joked that Tom should not try to move her again. She spent the next twenty-nine years in Pensacola with friends and family. She was a loving and devoted Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. We will miss her quick wit and her beautiful spirit. She was preceded in death by her parents, Collie and Marie Thompson, and her brother Ronald Thompson. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Hale and her brother Jerry Thompson. She leaves her six children: Beverly Bretana-Austin; Peggy Price and her companion, Phil Brown; Michael Gossman and spouse Deanna; Gary Gossman and spouse Jeanne, Dennis Gossman; and Tim Gossman and his companion, Carol Wilson. She also leaves behind eighteen loving Grandchildren and four Great Grandsons.
