Obituary

Mark Schuyler Van Hoose, 59, of Pensacola, FL passed away on Monday, July 29, 2013. Schuy was born in Birmingham, AL on June 18, 1954. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and Biology from Earlham College in Richmond, IN, and later earned a Master's Degree in Fisheries Biology from Auburn University. He was employed at the Alabama Marine Resources Lab on Dauphin Island, AL from 1983 to 2009. During his 27-year tenure, he piloted single- and double-engine boats in all coastal Alabama waters without mishap as a Coast Guard-certified vessel operator. He was also certified as an EMT Paramedic in Mobile County, AL. Schuy loved the outdoors, and especially enjoyed his 25 years as an avid bird enthusiast, frequently participating in bird counts along the greater Gulf Coast. He was a voracious reader, and amassed an impressive library of hardcover books, mostly about American history, politics, and culture. He was particularly close to his mother's family, and took great pleasure in their company, always generously offering his help and support whenever and wherever it was needed. He also acted as family historian, and devoted many hours transcribing family letters and documents. He is preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn Eddins Van Hoose and father, Alfred (Alf) Van Hoose, Jr. Survivors include his brother, Alfred "Buddy" Van Hoose III of Columbiana, AL; sister, Susanna Feld (Bernie) of Birmingham, AL; nephew, Gil Rogers (Parky) of Decatur, GA; maternal aunts, Laurie Eddins Thrash of Pensacola, FL, Barbara Eddins Wenner of Pensacola, FL, Hope Eddins Glover (Will) of Pensacola, FL, Jeanie Ruth Eddins Morris (Gene) of Helena, AL; numerous cousins throughout the US; special aunt, Betty Anne Lambert of Pensacola, FL; and dear friend and former colleague, Dianne McKinnon of Calera, AL. Visitation will be held 10:00am until the Funeral Service to begin at 11:00am Friday, August 2, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel in Pensacola, FL with Reverend Dr. Randy Jackson of First Presbyterian Church, Pensacola, FL officiating. Burial will take place at 3:00pm on Friday August 2, 2013 at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Frisco City, AL. Honorary pallbearers will be Bernie Feld, Gil Rogers, Norman Glover, Frank Burton, Lamar Christenberry and George Thomas Jones. Memorial contributions may be made to the Francis M. Weston Audubon Society, P. O. Box 17484, Pensacola, FL 32522.
