Martin Frederick Maney, 98, was born November 16, 1918 and died peacefully October 11, 2017 in the presence of family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Bailey Maney. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Martin Maney and Jessie Almeda Buskey Maney; his siblings, Margaret Ellen (Maney) Taylor, Fredericka Maney, Dorothy Margaret (Maney) De Castro and Frederick Martin Maney, Jr.
He is survived by his children, Lynn Maney Griffin (Bill), Martin Maney, Jr., Mike Maney (Elaine), Dan Maney and Shannon Maney Lowery all of Pensacola and Pat Maney (Bonnie) of West Palm Beach, FL and Terry Maney (Arlene) of New Paltz, NY; as well as 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren & 1 great-great-grandchild.
Martin was born & grew up in Oswego, NY. He left high school prior to graduating and joined the Civilian Conservations Corp in order to help support his family during the Depression. He entered the US Army in 1940 when Oswego's Company D, 151 st Infantry, 38 th Division was federalized. He served in the Pacific Theater fighting in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands where he was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart and several Campaign medals.
Shortly after receiving a medical discharge from the Army he went to work at St. Regis Paper Company in their Personnel Department. In 1948 he came to Pensacola to help establish local operations for St. Regis which had recently acquired the Pace Paper Company. He was transferred to St. Regis' New York Office in 1970 and shortly thereafter was promoted to Corporate Vice President of Labor Relations. Upon his retirement he and his wife returned to Pensacola.
He attended St. Paul Catholic Church and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Serra Club until his death.
Visitation will be held 9:30am until a Funeral Mass to begin at 10:00am Monday, October 30, 2017 at St. Paul Catholic Church. Private Family Committal will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Oswego's Company D.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the staff of Summer Vista Assisted Living facility, Dr. Amos Prevatt, Dr. Cheryl Jones, Arcadia Health & Rehabilitation Center and Regency Hospice, especially John Griffin.
