Obituary

Marvin Butler, 94, was called home by his Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 10, 2013. He was born in Andalusia, AL on March 31, 1919 to Oliver and Gladys Butler. After graduation from Straughn High School he was employed by the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. He entered the US Army in 1941 and served honorably as a Platoon Sergeant with the 80th Infantry Division in Europe during WWII. He moved to Pensacola in December of 1945. Marvin began his career with the Florida State Employment Service in1946 as a Veterans' Employment Representative. He was Assistant Manager of the Pensacola office from 1960 to 1973 and Manager until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of the West Hill/Gateway Church of Christ since 1947 and served as a deacon for 23 years. Marvin was active in the Pensacola Lions Club for more than 50 years, holding several local offices and served as District Governor, from 1970 to 1971. During that time, he was also Chairman of the Florida Council of Governors. He served as President/Chairman of Florida State Employees Association, and President of the Florida State Employees Federal Credit Union. He also served on the Northwest Florida Crippled Children's Association Board of Directors for more than 30 years. Marvin was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 15 for over 60 years. Other memberships included the Jaycees, Industrial Management Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Society of Personnel Administrators, Zellica Grotto, and Warrington Elks Lodge. In 1941, he married Ruby Sanders, of Andalusia, AL, who preceded him in death in 1985. Also preceeding him was his sister Dorothy McDonald. Marvin is survived by his wife, Dorothy Butler; one son, Craig S. Butler (Virginia); two granddaughters, Linda Smith (Tyson) and Julia Butler; one great-granddaughter, Norie Smith, all of Jacksonville, FL. Visitation will be held 5-7pm Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Funeral Service will be held 11:00am Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel with Mr. Jim Caples of the Gateway Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.
