Obituary

Mary Ann Dean (nee Schmittem), 84, of Pensacola, FL, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, with her children by her side.

Mary Ann married her late husband of 51 years, George Dean, in June of 1970. They had four children: Michael, Michelle, Paula, and Roger.

Mary Ann was a loving mother to her children, the homemaker for her family and supported her husband throughout his military career. Throughout the years, she volunteered at her children's schools and the American Red Cross. She had a passion for colonial furniture and architecture and worked as a docent at Gunston Hall, George Mason's historic home in Lorton, VA, while simultaneously pursuing her college education. While living in the Washington, D.C. area, Mary Ann gave tours in both English and her beloved German for the Guide Service of Washington, explaining the history of our capital city. She could answer many unique questions – even how many steps are in the Washington Monument!

Upon George's retirement, Mary Ann became a real estate agent in both Richmond, VA, and Destin, FL. She excelled in her career, earning multiple awards for her accomplishments. After retiring from real estate, Mary Ann remained active in the community by volunteering in several positions at Sacred Heart Hospital in Sandestin.

George and Mary Ann moved to Pensacola in 2018, where they resided until their deaths.

Mary Ann is survived by three children, thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. They include her son Michael and his daughters Hannah (Thomas), Sarah (Julian), Rachel and Rebecca; the children of her late daughter Michelle, James (Leslie) and Somer (Anthony, and sons Hudson and Connor); her daughter Paula (Robert) and her children Maryann (children, Aubrey and Jackson), David, and Robert (Kaitlyn); and her son Roger and his children Elizabeth (Tyler), Georgia Lynn, Marie (son, Lucius), and Hunter.

Visitation will be held 10:00am until a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 11:00am Thursday, September 21, 2023, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pensacola, with Fr. Hank Lech celebrant. Mary Ann will be laid to rest with her husband at Barrancas National Cemetery.
