Mary Jerri Elizabeth Satterfield, of Pensacola, FL, passed away on June 23, 2011 surrounded by three of her four children. The daughter of General Raymond E. Knapp and Clara Marion Dole Knapp, Jerri was born in Quantico, VA on June 7, 1931. Having been reared in a military environment, Jerri was no stranger to travel and spent her earliest years in Shanghai, China where her father was assigned. Jerri was an accomplished pianist, and upon her high school graduation, from Coronado High School, Coronado, CA was selected to attend the Juilliard School with a full scholarship at Lincoln Center in New York. However, life had different plans for Jerri and she chose instead to marry Navy Lieutenant j.g. James Blanding Dick of Greenwood, MS in 1949. Jimmy was later shot down in Korea on May 29, 1951, and Jerri was left to rear their daughter, Hollie Marion on her own. But life was not finished with Jerri, and in 1952, she married another pilot, Navy Lieutenant Commander Loys Butch M. Satterfield, a widower with one daughter, Mary Elizabeth. Together Jerri and Butch had three additional children. Jerri was a passionate horticulturist as well an expert in mycology, foraging and consuming the beloved mushroom. Those who knew her well were never surprised when she would stop the car for apparently no reason, and race out to pick wild mushrooms to include in a delectable dish. Cooking was a passion with Jerri and she was renowned among her friends for her gourmet meals and as a superb hostess. She was also an avid traveler, duplicate bridge player, an accomplished golfer and a volunteer for many organizations including the Gray Ladies. But her interests did not stop there. Jerri had several businesses during her life, amongst them, an antique shop and estate appraisals in New York where she was also involved with real estate. Later, after settling in Pensacola, FL in 1992, Jerri became active in the Pensacola Heritage Foundation and the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola Naval Air Station. Jerri was preceded in death by her first husband, James Blanding Dick and her son, Robert Barry Satterfield. She is survived by her four remaining children, Hollie Marion Satterfield of Upperville, VA, Lee Martin Satterfield of Oakland, MD, Tracy Anne Satterfield Miller of Goleta, CA, Mary Elizabeth Satterfield Ridgway of San Saba, TX and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and cousins. A gathering of friends and family to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 am on July 24, 2011, at the Pensacola Yacht Club, 1897 Cypress St., Pensacola, FL. Her ashes will be scattered in Vermont at a private service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, 1750 Radford Blvd., Suite B, NAS Pensacola, FL 32508. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
