Obituary

Mary Alta Nobles, 87, of Pensacola, FL passed away on December 25, 2013. Miss Nobles was a descendent of an old, prominent family of Pensacola; dating back to the early 1880's. She was born on July 15, 1926 the eldest daughter of the late Dr. Latimer Clinton Nobles and the former Olivia Boone of Pensacola, FL. Mary Alta was a graduate of Pensacola High School and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She studied music with her aunt, the late Mrs. John Boschen of Pensacola, FL and later on with the late Estelle Liebling of New York City, NY. While in New York, she and her three sisters studied, performed and recorded music as a vocal quartet (The Nobles' Sisters). She began her working career with Columbia Broadcasting in New York City before returning to Pensacola and starting a long career working for Chemstrand (later Monsanto); assisting with employee insurance benefits. Mary Alta was life-long member of Gadsden Street United Methodist Church, Pensacola, FL and also taught Sunday School for many years. Other memberships include the Christian Women of Pensacola and the Women for Responsible Legislation. Mary Alta was the granddaughter of the late Robert E. and Cornelia (Roberts) Nobles, and niece of the late, Miss Lena, Lucille and Eva Nobles; Lawrence E., Lemuel A., Dr. William D., Dr. Velpeau R., Dr. Perry E. and Dr. Clifton C. Nobles all of Pensacola, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Latimer C. Nobles of Pensacola and her sisters, Cornelia Olivia (Nobles) Nettles (Leslie) and Virginia Lee Nobles both of Pensacola, FL. She is survived by her sister, Martha Mae (Nobles) Taffe; three nephews, Owen H. Taffe, Ill (Suzanne) of Lanoke, AR, Clinton P. Taffe of Houston, TX and Leslie B. Nettles, Jr. (Dawn) of San Diego, CA; two grand nieces, Shauna Nettles and Alden Taffe and three grand nephews, Brad Nettles, Connor Taffe and Garrett Taffe. Mary Alta wishes were for a Graveside service only. The service will be held at Robert's Cemetery on Creighton Blvd. at 2:00pm on Monday, January 6, 2014 with the Rev. Bobby Ellisor officiating. In that her sister, Martha Nobles Taffe, passed away just two days after her, both graveside services will be held together. Pallbearers will be Robert (Bob) Moulton, William D. Nobles, III, Connor Taffe and Garrett Taffe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society, 5401 Corporate Woods Dr., Pensacola 32504; Gadsden St. United Methodist Church, 901 E. Gadsden St., Pensacola 32501 or Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola 32504 . The family would like to extend its' appreciation to Covenant Hospice, CareStaff and Nobles Independent Consultants, all of Pensacola, FL, along with Pamela R. Nobles, RN, and Robert (Bob) Moulton for their love, compassion and assistance during Miss Nobles' end of life journey.
