Mary Geraldine Harmon Uden passed away at the age of, 100 Thursday, October 22, 2026. There is some comfort to the family that October 22nd is also the anniversary (2018) of the death of Gregory Covington, Mary’s dear son-in-law.
Mary was a native of Woodlawn, VA in the Blue Ridge Mountains where she shared a strong family heritage with her four siblings GH (Gooch) Harmon, Jim Harmon, Linda Bobbitt, Anita King and large extended family. She grew up during the depression and shared that she and neighbors walked miles to school in rugged winter weather but also had an enduring life of self-sufficiency. Mary graduated from Woodlawn High School and attended Madison College. She worked as a forelady at Dupont Industries in Martinsville, VA and it was there she met her future husband, A. Solomon Uden. They relocated to Pensacola from Eden, NC and both Sol and Mary established long-term businesses. Sol and Mary had one daughter, Jennifer Uden Covington, who graced them with a large extended family of three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mary successfully owned Uden’s Ladies Wear in the Brownsville community for over 40 years. She loved the challenge of merchandise ordering (knowing the size and preferred style of her customers), bookkeeping, and selling. Her favorite part of the business was her long friendships with loyal salesladies, especially Clara Stewart as well her beloved customers. Uden’s Ladies Wear had a level of personal customer service that was unmatched, where husbands could rush in the last minute of Christmas Eve knowing that Mary and staff would choose the perfect outfits for gift giving. A simple phone call to Uden’s and clothing would be selected and delivered to the customer’s car. Mary was awarded a proclamation in 2026 as a long-term business owner by Luman May, District 3 County Commissioner, City of Pensacola.
In addition to her business acumen, Mary embraced her immediate and extended family and was very generous to them. Grandchildren have fond memories of visits to their “Meemaw’s” and riding in her Cadillac to get a Wendy’s frosty! She exemplified an independent spirit, a lifestyle of good health habits, staying abreast of current news events and politics, and enjoying simple things of life. She was an avid pet lover and proud of her beautiful azaleas and camellias. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Uden Covington; grandson, Alex Covington (Laah), twin granddaughters, Mary and Kelly Covington; great-grandchildren, Gregory Davis, Millie Selepak, and Lydia Covington; sister, Anita King and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Visitation will begin at 12:30pm on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. A funeral cortege will depart Harper-Morris at 1:30pm for a 2:00pm Graveside Service at Barrancas National Cemetery, with Rev. Mike Mashburn officiating.
The family extends a special thanks to Kimo and Tammy Kouns, and Marcia Williams who were instrumental in managing her care. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the caring staff at Life Care Center of Pensacola and the staff at Home Helpers.
