Matthew Wilson Dickey, Jr., 76, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2026. Born in Dallas, Texas, Matt lived a life marked by strength, service, humor, and a deep love for his family and friends. Raised in a close and strong family, those roots shaped the loyal, generous man so many people loved.
Matt proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. His service was a defining part of his life and reflected his courage and resilience.
Matt studied at Western Carolina University and the University of North Texas, experiences that helped shape his early years.
He had a larger-than-life personality and a gift for making people feel at home. Matt loved to cook and entertain and was happiest when feeding the people he loved. He was known for his famous waffles, sweet tea, and Rice Krispie treats, simple comforts that became lasting memories for so many. Whether he was in the kitchen, tending to his garden, watching football, capturing moments through his camera lens, or out riding his Harley, Matt found joy in the moments that brought people together.
He especially loved the open road, riding his Harley along the scenic stretches of 30A and the Blue Ridge Parkway, places where he felt free and most alive.
Music was the soundtrack of his life. He loved concerts, classic rock, and any opportunity to turn up the volume and sing along. His quick wit, storytelling, and infectious spirit made every gathering more memorable. Matt never met a stranger. If you crossed his path, chances are you left with a full plate, a good story, and the feeling that you had just made a lifelong friend.
For the past 12 years, Matt faced health challenges with courage, including a serious motorcycle accident and cancer. Time and again he fought to beat the odds. He was determined to keep living life to the fullest.
Above all, Matt was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend. His family was the center of his world, and he took immense pride in the lives and accomplishments of those he loved.
He is survived by his children, Donna Jeane Dickey; Matthew Wilson Dickey, III (Erin); and Myles Thomas Dickey; his grandchildren, Emma Ryleigh, Matthew Wilson, IV, and Elizabeth Jane; and his siblings, Thomas Hodge Dickey, Dorothy Reyelts, and Anna Bee Torgerson (June 20, 1951 - March 30, 2026).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew Wilson Dickey and Dorothy Thomas Dickey.
A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, followed by a 2:00 p.m. escorted procession to Naval Air Station Pensacola for a graveside service at Barrancas National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
He will be deeply missed and always remembered. The family asks that you honor Matt’s memory by sharing a story, playing your favorite song, and holding your loved ones close.
