Michael J. Murray,Jr., 86, died Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the Haven of Our Lady of Peace. Mike was born August 29, 1922 in New York City. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the Navy during W.W. II. As a fighter pilot, he was assigned to the aircraft carrier, Tarawa. After leaving the military, he returned to New York and attended Columbia University and Hofstra University attaining a B.S. in Business Management. He enjoyed a long career in management with Equitable Life Assurance in Pensacola, Columbus, Ohio, and Mobile, Alabama. Mike held all the chairs in the Pensacola Association of Life Underwriters over a period of 13 years. He was an avid supporter of education for agents in the insurance industry and attained his CLU degree early in his career. Mike was an active member of the community serving the Pensacola Chamber of Commerce as V.P. and board member for many years. He also served as V.P. and board member for Catholic Social Services in Pensacola. He was a past V.P. and board member of the Mobile Lions Club, member of the Navy League, and board member of the Pensacola Golden Agers. Mike was a devoted Catholic and served as past president of the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart and St. Paul in Pensacola, and as past president of St. Agathas Parish Council in Upper Arlington, Ohio. He was a member of the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus, as well as, the Ceremonial Team. Mike was appointed by Bishop Symons and approved by Pope John to the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre which is the highest honor bestowed by Rome on a Catholic layman. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Eileen, his first wife, Carolyn Herrington Murray, his daughter Margaret Duncan, and his granddaughter, Alison Painter. Surviving are his wife, Doris McVoy Talbot Murray, his daughters, Patricia (John) Hail of Florence, AZ, Eileen (Dan) Painter of Canal Winchester, OH, Dr. Inga (Joe) Pine of Highland, CA, and Mary Murray of Columbus, Ohio; his grandchildren, Joseph (Kelli) Hail, Carolyn (Jim) Hail Sheehan, Aaron Painter, Evan and Carrington Tosino; and three great-grandchildren, Miriam, Alexandra and Adonai Sheehan. He is also survived by his brothers Owen Murray (Alexa) of Dartmouth, MA, and Pat Murray (Vegee) of Spring Hill, Florida and numerous nieces and nephews. The Rosary will be prayed at 5:00pm followed by the visitation until 7:00pm, Thursday. May 14, 2009 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am, Friday, May 15, 2009 at St. Pauls Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family requests no flowers.
