Mildred "Mimi" Virginia Hathcoat Gulledge, 96, of Pensacola, FL passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2012. Mimi was born in Harrison, AR to Marvin and Julia Hathcoat on August 2, 1916. She was the oldest of four sisters and grew up in a loving family. Her father was an attorney and her mother a housewife and piano teacher. Both were graduates of the University of Arkansas. Mimi did well in school, was popular with everyone, and was selected homecoming queen her senior year. After graduating high school, she attended Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia Ark. for one year and then transferred to Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. After working secretarial jobs in Kansas City, MO, she and a sister moved to Pensacola, FL during the war and worked for the Navy at NAS Pensacola. One day she was walking down a hallway and bumped into Ken Gulledge, a Navy Lt. attending flight school at NAS. They had known each other at Henderson. They began dating and were married in April 1945. They then spent the next 28 years moving to many duty stations around the country. Mimi loved this life -- the travel, meeting new people, running into friends from previous duty stations, the sociability of Navy life. For Mimi, the highlight of their career was the three years spent in Singapore where Ken was defense attaché with the American Embassy. They made many good friends there that they kept in touch with and occasionally visited after Ken retired in 1972. Retirement brought them to Pensacola and a house by the 17th green at Scenic Hills CC. Mimi was a great storyteller and loved humorous anecdotes. She played an outstanding jazz piano. She wrote humorous poems for friends and family, and had a flair for making her house inviting and pretty. She was a great cook and loved entertaining at home. She had a beautiful face and a beautiful soul; she was kind and caring to everyone. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Kenneth E. Gulledge, Capt, USN (ret); a son, Mark Gulledge (Judy) of Orlando; a daughter, Tracy Gulledge of Pensacola; a sister, Julie States of Decatur, GA; and nieces and nephews. A Graveside Committal Service will be held 2:00 pm Monday, October 22, 2012 at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Grateful thanks go to the medical caregivers at Covenant Hospice who provided comfort and care in her last few days.
