Obituary

Morgan Wimberly Bunch, Jr., 99, of Pensacola, FL died peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 7, 2018.

Morgan was born in Houston, TX, on January 29, 1919. At the age of five, his father died, and he and his mother moved to her home in Anniston, AL. He grew up with cousins, aunts, and uncles in Anniston and attended college at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute now known as Auburn University. He graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1941 and shortly thereafter was commissioned as an Officer in the Navy. He was assigned to a newly built LST and helped commission the ship for battle in California before heading to war in the South Pacific Theater. When asked about the war, he spoke of many encounters with the enemy and in one instance, was blown from his feet on the deck of the ship when a Japanese fighter bombed a fuel depot near where they were docked. At the conclusion of the war, he returned to civilian life starting his career in New Orleans with Humble Oil which later became Exxon. While living in the French Quarter in New Orleans, he met an aspiring artist and draftswoman, Margaret Anne Staley, who was also working for Humble Oil. The two were married in 1946 in New Orleans and began their life together which spanned 72 years. They had four children who were raised mostly in New Orleans, with a small stay in Jackson, MS. In 1972 Morgan was transferred to Pensacola, FL. Morgan retired from Exxon in 1984 and spent his retirement visiting with family, performing charity work and traveling around the world. Morgan and Anne involved themselves in many worthy causes over the years including those supported by the Presbyterian Church, building houses for Habitat for Humanity, helping to resettle Vietnamese refugees, Meals on Wheels, and participating in various church-sponsored missions. Morgan was an avid fisherman and loved to take vacations with his family visiting national parks, landmarks, and camping throughout the US.

He is preceded in death by his father, Morgan W. Bunch, Sr.; his mother, Ethel Elam and his son, Gordon Staley Bunch.

He is survived by his wife Anne; three children, Morgan Wimberly Bunch III (Sue), Mary Elizabeth McWilliams (John), and Henry Staley Bunch (Karen). Morgan is also survived by seven grandchildren, Erin Wade (Shaun Streetman), Katrina Sun (Gene), John Morgan McWilliams (Danielle), Sarah Guerra (Ricky), Miles Bunch, Lindsey Bunch and Hayley Bunch and nine great-grandchildren. Morgan was a wonderful, loving husband and father, and friend to many. He will be missed.
