IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nan Greenhut
James
September 2, 1948 – March 29, 2024
Nan Greenhut James, 75, a cherished pillar of the Pensacola community, gracefully concluded her remarkable 27-year journey battling cancer on Friday, March 29, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.
Nan, a true Pensacolian with roots tracing back to the 1870s through her parents, Dudley and Alice Greenhut, captivated all who crossed her path with her unwavering courage, strength, and resilience throughout her illness. Each day, Nan greeted life with unwavering optimism, embracing cherished rituals like her beloved book club gatherings, lunches and dinners with friends, and cherished moments with her Pensacola family, especially her dear brother, Bill Greenhut, and sister-in-law Connie, sister Molly Gail Kiely and brother-in-law Brian and her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She seized every chance to explore the world alongside her daughter, Alice. Her devotion to her daughter, Alice, and son, Charles, was boundless. She beamed with pride at Alice's esteemed career as an assistant to US Senator Lindsey Graham, and now as the Director of Presidential Relations for Ben Sasse, President of The University of Florida. Nan's joy multiplied with Alice's marriage to Captain Mark Burns, USN, Commanding Officer, Naval Support Activity Washington, Washington DC, which expanded her family with five cherished stepchildren, Norah, Nolan, Ryan, Regan and Rhiannon. Charles, her son, earned admiration working his way through law school and later as a respected attorney with Clark, Partington, and Hart, a testament to his mother's unwavering support. Nan reveled in the precious moments spent with Charles, his wife Paula Hayward James, and her grandchildren, Sawyer and Colette, relishing in their laughter and milestones. An avid traveler, Nan never allowed her diagnosis to hinder her adventures, journeying across the world with Alice by her side. Her circle of friends, including lifelong companions like Rosann Mann and Marcy Kugelman, brought her immense joy and support. Devoted to her faith, Nan found solace and inspiration at Christ Episcopal Church where Rev. Dr. Michael Hoffman, Rev. Kathryn Gillet, and Rev. Walter Kindergan, guided her spiritual journey. Her commitment extended to volunteering, notably at Covenant Hospice, Sacred Heart Hospital, and Ronald McDonald House where she offered comfort and care to those in need.
In her final days, Nan found solace in the compassionate care of Dr. Thomas Sunnenberg, Dr. Tarek Eldawy, Dr. Alexander Brown, and the dedicated nurses at Sacred Heart Hospital.
A celebration of Nan's vibrant life will be held at 10:00am Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Christ Episcopal Church, with Rev. Dr. Michael Hoffman officiating.
Contributions in her memory can be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida or Christ Episcopal Church in honor of Nan Greenhut James.
Nan's legacy of resilience, love, strength, and unwavering faith will forever illuminate the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.
