Obituary

Neal Stewart Flowers, 85, passed away January 12, 2012 at his home in Pensacola, FL. Neal was born in Pensacola, FL on November 27, 1926. He graduated from Norview High School, Norfolk, VA in 1943; Pre Med School from University of Alabama in 1948 and received his Medical Doctorate of Radiology from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA in 1952. He served his internship at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, GA from 52-53 and his residency in Radiology at Hurley Hospital in Flint, MI from 53-56. He served in the US Navy as a medical corpsman in WWII from 44-46. Neal received numerous awards and medals including 2 Meritorious Service awards, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation, WWII American Campaign, WWII Victory, National Service Defense and the Navy Unit Commendation. Dr. Flowers was the Head Radiologist at General Hospital in Mobile, AL from 56-59 also a Staff Radiologist at the Mobile Infirmary in Mobile, AL 56-62, private practice in Mobile, AL. 62-76, then became the Head Radiologist of Monroe Co. Hospital in Monroeville, AL from76-79. He was honored to serve on the Board for the Private Practice Journal 69-79. Neal reentered the US Navy as a Commander and served as a Radiologist from 79-95, as Assistant Head Radiologist at Navy Hospital in Pensacola, FL from 79-83. Served as Chief Medical Staff / Head Radiologist at Navy Hospital in Naples, Italy, 83-86, achieving the rank of Captain in 1984. He served as Head Radiologist at Navy Hospital in Charleston, SC from 86-88, acting XO / Director Ancillary Services / Head Radiologist at Navy Hospital in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from 88-91, also Director of Ancillary Services / Head Radiologist at Navy Hospital in Pensacola, FL from 91-95 when he retired. His hobbies included, building model ships, traveling with Ruby, especially to Israel and to Italy, photography and early Christian art. Neals ministry was hospitality and as a gourmet cook, enjoyed hosting many dinner parties. He was a member of McIlwain Memorial Presbyterian Church of Pensacola, FL and considered it a blessing to serve his church family by washing pots and pans. He is preceded in death by his father, Lt. Kyrie Neal Flowers, US Hospital Corps; mother, Annie Laurie Stewart and his sister, Dr. Anne Flowers. Survivors include his loving wife, Ruby Reyes Flowers; 2 daughters, Jeaneal Flowers of Dallas, TX and Shirley Stanton (Mike) of Mobile, AL; 2 sons, Lt/Cdr. Kevin Neal Flowers, USN-retired (Colleen) of Avon, IN and Gary Henderson (Debbie) of Houston, TX; 7 grandchildren, Kaitlyn Henry (Andrew), Anna Grace Flowers, John Flowers, Michael Flowers, Luke Stanton, Gary Stanton and Joseph Henderson; and 1 great grandchild, Evelyn Henry. Visitation will be held 9:30 AM Wednesday, January 18, 2012, with a Funeral Service to begin at 11:00 AM at McIlwain Memorial Presbyterian Church in Pensacola, FL with Pastor Rob Looper officiating. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors. Active Pallbearers will be, Kevin Flowers, Gary Henderson, Mike Stanton, John Flowers, Michael Flowers, Luke Stanton and Gary Stanton. Honorary Pallbearers will be, the Kitchen Crew, James Singleton, Pete Devries, Ron Jackson, Bob Oaks, Johnathan Oaks, Phil Vaughn, Ted Poole, Rex Brooks and Patrick Crowley. PLEASE In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McIlwain Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1220 E. Blount St., Pensacola, FL 32503 and/or Terry Atkinson, missionary to Greece; Mediterranean Missions Inc., PO Box 3124, Grand Rapids, MI 49501. The family would like to give special thanks to, 5 West Neuroscience Unit at Sacred Heart Hospital (nurse, Chloe) and Covenant Hospice (Sylvia Stock, RN).
