Obituary

Nell Warren (Irving) Doyel, 84, passed to her heavenly home from Sacred Heart Hospital on June 10, 2014. She was born on April 7, 1930 in Montgomery, AL to Roger and Emma Nell Irving who preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Leroy and son, David both of Pensacola and son, Matthew and wife Kahala and grandchildren, Kekoa and Kalei of Windsor, CA. She was an only child and her family moved to Florida during the depression after her father lost everything in the depression. She attended Anona grade school, Indian Rocks Beach, FL and graduated in the high school class of 1948, St Petersburg, FL. She attended Carson Newman University graduating in 1952 with BA and Piano Forte degrees. She received a Masters Degree in Religious Education (MRE) from Southwestern Seminary in 1956. She was subsequently employed by Gaston Ave. Baptist Church, Dallas, TX and did mission field work in Arizona. In 1958 she became Baptist Student Union (BSU) Director at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, where she met her husband of 50 years. They were married in December 1963 in Honolulu, HI and returned in December 2013 to celebrate their 50th university. While living in Hawaii (husband in the Navy) both their sons were born. Throughout her life she was a wife, homemaker and teacher. She taught at Dixie Hollins HS, St Petersburg, FL; DOD school, Verdun, France; Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, NM; Espanola HS, NM; Panahou School, Honolulu; Hawaii Baptist Academy, Honolulu; Kailua HS, HI; Benitican Elementary School, Subic Bay, PI and Irving, TX. While doing all this she taught private piano lessons and was president of the Irving Music Teachers Association and a leader in the Texas Music Teachers Association. She also worked as a church music director, church secretary and other positions. She retired from Sacred Heart Hospital (SHH) administration in 1995 and started enjoying retirement, doing traveling with her husband. Her father was selected Handicapped American of the Year in 1964 and was presented with the plaque at the White House by Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. He was an laryngetomy and taught esophageal speech and was missing his right hand. After a tour of the White House the group went through the Rose Garden and the gardener cut off a rose handing it to Mrs. Irving, saying it was the first one from the garden. She was an avid walker belonging to the American Volkssport Association (AVA) and local walking clubs, Pensacola Volksmarch Club and Emerald Coast Volkssport Club holding offices in both. She also belonged to Sea Side Art Gallery making and displaying stained glass articles. Her talent was such that other artists bought from her. Throughout her very full life she enjoyed being a Navy wife (with 33 yrs of duty) but stated it was the toughest job in the Navy. She will be sorely missed by all that knew or came into contact with her. Visitation will be held from 1-3pm Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 1pm Monday, June 16, 2014 in the Pleitz Chapel of First Baptist Church, Pensacola, FL with Rev. Don Minton officiating.
