Obituary

Norma L. Chumley ascended to the Church Triumphant on January 18, 2024.

She was born November 27, 1938, in Jeffersonville, IN, and grew up in Louisville, KY, where she attended Aherns High School and worked in the medical career field in the X-ray department at the city's Baptist Hospital. She met a seminary student named Theodore (Ted) R. Chumley, Jr., and they were happily married on June 7, 1961. Norma was a resident of Pensacola, FL, since August 1990, after her husband retired as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force. They served together at Stuart Robinson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Louisville, KY; Orchard Park Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, IN; and First Presbyterian Church in Montpelier, OH. Toward the end of Ted's active-duty career, they chose Pensacola as their retirement home. As was their respected pattern, they served together at Westminster Presbyterian Church for almost a decade.

Norma was a devoted leader, a devout follower, and a faithful servant throughout her husband's civilian and military career. She was active in each church and chapel, often leading them at the local and regional levels to nurture God through faith and family. Not only did she represent her church at Presbyterian Women's retreats, she also was a leader of the Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC), the Protestant Youth of the Chapel (PYOC), the Girl Scouts while their girls were young, was an American Red Cross volunteer—even leading the hospital program at Shaw Air Force Base, SC—and assisted teachers as she and Ted ministered nationally and internationally. Did we mention she loved to sing? Every choir welcomed her voice! At various assignment farewells, Ted's commanders would say that he could go, but Norma had to stay. He was affectionately known as "Norma's husband," instead of the position he filled at that time. She was loved by all!

Norma was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years in 2022, and their daughter, Laura M. Sasser, in 2023. Also preceding her were her parents, Raymond and Mildred Lambert; her brothers, Douglas and Charles David; and her sister, JoAnn Marston.

She is survived by their daughter, Col. Robyn Chumley, USAF retired; and their grandson, Theodore (Ted) D. Sasser, a software developer at Innovative Management Concepts, Inc. Internment was at the Barrancas National Cemetery at Naval Air Station-Pensacola.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00am on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, with Dr. Hugh Hamilton officiating. Mrs. Chumley was laid to rest with her husband, Theodore Roosevelt Chumley at Barrancas National Cemetery.

Many thanks to Specialty Health and Rehabilitation Center's staff for expertly caring for Norma since April 2022. Thanks, also, to Covenant Care Hospice for helping her (and us) transition to peace. Finally, thank you to Dr. Hugh Hamilton for supporting the Chumleys and Sassers even before they joined the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Pensacola.
