Norman J. Kerr passed away on January 10, 2018. He was born on March 16,1929, attended The Rhode Island College of Education, graduating with a B. Ed. Degree in 1951. He became a fourth-grade teacher at Reynolds Elementary School in Bristol R.I. He played the trumpet in several dance and jazz bands while in high school and college.
Norman joined the Naval Reserve in 1948 and attended the U.S. Naval Submarine School in New London Ct while he was in college. He entered the Naval School, Officer Candidate in March, 1952 and graduated as an Ensign in July, 1952. Ordered to the USS Hailey (DD-556) in Newport R.I., he became its Gunnery Liaison Officer as it sailed to join the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Southwestern Pacific. After duty in the Korean War, he augmented to the Regular Navy and served as the Operations Officer of the USS Fletcher (DDE-445). Resigning his commission in 1957, he wrote education and training materials for the Navy and enrolled in the Graduate School of George Washington University where he earned his Master's degree 1961 and his Doctorate in 1969.
He was the Senior Psychologist for the Chief of Naval Training in Millington, TN, then transferred to Pensacola to become the Director of the Research Application Center for the Chef of Naval Education and Training. Following his retirement from federal service, he joined the Science Applications Internal Corporation and the Resource Consultants, Incorporated consulting firms in positions in senior analytic positions. He was hired by George Mason University, becoming The Director of Employee Relations, and retired from that position in 1984.
He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Kerr and Maria Martins Kerr, his siblings, Ruth Parella, Ethel Anderson, Walter (Bud) Kerr, Josephine Zech and Dorothy Jean Magee.
He is survived by his wife Melinda (Mindy) Kerr, sons Christopher and Stephen and daughter Amanda, grandsons Justin and Gavin.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 5-7pm at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Vincent de Paul Society, 3832 N. 9 th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32503.
