Obituary

Rev. Norman Glynn Williams, Sr., left his earthly home and transitioned into the Realms of Glory on the evening of Tuesday, March 19, 2024, after an extended illness.

A native of Perry County, AL, Rev. Williams was born August 30, 1938, raised in Marion, and was a graduate of Perry County High School (1956). He completed a year of studies at Asbury College (Wilmore, KY), before earning a bachelor's degree from Birmingham-Southern College (1961), where he was a member and chaplain of Theta Chi fraternity, manager of the swim team, and was associated with the Ministerial Association, Price Fellowship, Eta Sigma Phi classical languages fraternity, and Hilltop News student newspaper. He earned a Master of Divinity from Emory University (1972).

Rev. Williams was an Ordained Elder in the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church and served as a pastor for 43 years, serving multiple churches and charges in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. Rev. Williams loved to sing, and he is fondly remembered by many former congregations for his beautiful tenor voice and musical talent, as well as his gentle and loving pastoral manner. Even after retirement, Rev. Williams sang in the choir at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery for several years and occasionally was a guest pastor at various churches.

A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, in recent years he felt great joy and pride in the birth of his first great-grandson and extension of the family name Glynn into a new generation, and he was eagerly anticipating the birth of his second great-grandchild. In addition to his family, Rev. Williams loved coffee, church dinners, southern gospel music, fellowship with family, friends, and parishioners, and making connections between people he had known across his childhood and years of ministry.

Rev. Williams is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rebecca H. Williams; son, N. Glynn (Teresa) Williams, Jr.; daughter, Christy W. (Chris) Meredith; grandchildren, Jonathan Glynn (Morgan) Williams, Aaron Williams, Andrew Meredith, and Alison Meredith; great-grandson Thomas Glynn Williams; brothers and sisters-in law, nieces and nephews, and multiple cousins and extended family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, C.W. and O'delle P. Williams; sister, Wendy W. Franklin; as well as various aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A visitation will be held from 1:00pm until a Memorial Service for Norman begins at 2:00pm, Sunday, March 24, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, AL with Bishop Lawson Bryan officiating. Rev. Williams will be interred in the columbarium at the church.
