Obituary

Olen G. Giles, 93 of Pensacola went to be with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on June 3, 2012. He centered his life around his faith and his family. Mr. Giles was born in Decatur, MS on January 5, 1919 and worked on his family's farm along with his five brothers and sisters. In high school he enjoyed performing in several school plays. He joined the Navy during WWII and became a Naval Aviator and served the Navy proudly for 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. He married Evelyn Hawkins on October 3, 1942 and together they enjoyed living in the new places where they were stationed while in the Navy. They were married for 48 years. After retiring from the Navy, Olen had a successful career with GEICO and helped develop the General Field Representative Program. One of Olen's greatest joys was meeting and helping people. He was a member of the Gadsden Street United Methodist Church for 40 years, the Rotary Club, the Sojourners and the Masons where he enjoyed the brotherhood and friendship from all of these associations. Olen's pride and joy was his family. With his patience, encouragement and support for his children, grandchildren and their families, he remained the rock of his family even during his final days. His example will always serve as inspiration for each of us. Olen is preceded in death by his loving wife, Evelyn. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Suzanne Giles-Martinez; his son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Karen Giles; and his grandsons Frederick Henry (Lori), Andrew Giles (Juliana), and Matthew Giles (Joan). He is also survived by a special nephew, Dr. William Spain; favorite niece, Mary Sula Bishop; and longtime friend, Virginia (Jean) Girdner. Olen will be greatly missed by his family. His example of honesty, integrity and kindness is his legacy for his family and friends and he will be remembered lovingly. Visitation will be held at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel on Saturday, June 9, 2012 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be at Gadsden Street United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 10 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Bobby Ellisor. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park with Military and Masonic Honors. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
