Otis Henry "Hank" Fendt, Jr. 87, peacefully passed away in Pensacola, FL on Monday, September 18, 2023, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Hank, an only child, was born on March 11, 1936, to Otis Henry Fendt, Sr. and Helen Carter Fendt at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL. Hank's formative years were spent in the East Hill area of Pensacola, a time he often recalled as idyllic. He cherished memories of his childhood home, close friendships, and the wonderful experiences that shaped his youth. Hank took great pride in his achievements as an Eagle Scout and his membership in the Order of the Arrow during his time in the Boy Scouts of America.
After graduating from Pensacola High School, Hank pursued higher education at Marion Military Institute and Asbury College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry. With the Vietnam conflict on the horizon, Hank was drafted into the United States Navy, where he joined as an officer. His profound love for the Navy led him to remain on active duty for 23 years, serving his nation with dedication and honor, ultimately retiring as a Commander. Hank frequently shared captivating stories of his enriching experiences abroad with his family and friends. He received several prestigious medals and commendations for his service, including The Naval Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon Bar with Device, and the Vietnam Service Medal.
Upon retirement from military service, Hank returned to Pensacola to be near his ailing mother. He dedicated the remaining years of his career to working as a Superintendent of jobs at Baughn Renovations.
Hank is preceded in death by his father, Otis Henry Fendt, Sr.; his mother, Helen Carter Fendt, and his daughter, Kristin Page Castle (Troy).
Family was of utmost importance to Hank. He never missed a birthday or significant family event and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Hank is survived by the love of his life, "Penny" Lynn Mary Fendt, with whom he shared 37 years of marriage, setting an example of a strong, healthy, and loving union for all who knew them. He is also survived by his children, Scott Johnston, Korrine Akridge, Edward Fendt (Michelle), and Ryan Fendt (Amsley). He also leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren, Zoie Maloof (Andrew), Joseph Akridge (Summer), Michaela Beckstrom (Chase), Kristopher Davis, Meredith Fendt, Oliver Fendt, and Eisley Fendt as well as two great-grandchildren, Riley Maloof and Rhett Beckstrom.
Hank will be remembered as a loving and kind-hearted man who never placed himself above others and was always there to assist when needed. He was a devoted family man who held deep love for God, his wife, children, his hometown of Pensacola, and his country.
A visitation will be held 10:00am until the funeral service begins at 11:00am Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at St. Mark United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
