Obituary

Patricia Ruth Carney Griffith of Pensacola Beach, Florida, born to Joseph Gardner Carney and Anna McElhenney Carney on February 17, 1926, in Altoona, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 17, 2011. She was the only child of her parents as her mother died shortly after childbirth. Her fathers sister, Kathryn Carney, dedicated her life to caring for her brothers child along with her brother, Joseph. Later in life, Patricia reciprocated her Aunts care for her. Patricia attended school in Altoona followed by Penn State University where she earned her Bachelors Degree in French and English. She met the love of her life, William Bill Howard Griffith in high school. He also attended Penn State University. After the War, they married in 1948. Their only son, Michael John, was born to them on her birthday. Pat possessed a special poise, grace and charm. She had such a kind, yet discerning way about her. She along with her husband and son lived in Guam and traveled extensively during the course of Bills military service to include Hawaii, California, New York and Massachusetts. She came to Pensacola from Sewickley, Pennsylvania with Bill when he found the site for the Westinghouse Plant in Pensacola and had the Plant built. Not only did the community prosper from the job growth created by her husbands business contribution, but Pat contributed to the family support needed for those that would be so critical to the Plants success. She entertained, joined civic groups including leading the region in support for the Girl Scouts of America and supported the community in many ways. She was a lifetime member of the Baptist Hospital Womens Board. She was a member of the Pensacola Country Club and Pensacola Yacht Club. She was an avid supporter of the Humane Society. She absolutely adored cats. Pat opened her upscale womens shop, The Golden Cricket, on Seville Square and not only provided a boutique with New York style clothing, but adopted every amazing cat that wandered by. They were all amazing to her. Pat was impeccable in all that she did. Her standards were high and so was her compassion. She seemed to care for everyone she met and be willing to reach out to them to try to make things better for them. Pat assumed the supportive role in the beach community volunteering and chairing numerous events and committees. She loved Pensacola Beach and served on many of the committees at her church, The Pensacola Beach Community United Church of Christ located on Pensacola Beach. She also belonged to and supported The First Presbyterian Church in Downtown Pensacola. Pat traveled extensively after retirement and enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved to laugh and she did. Pat found the fun in all she did while maintaining a sense a decorum which made it all the more exciting. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Gardner Carney and Anna McElhenney Carney, both of Altoona, Pennsylvania. Pat is survived by her husband, William H. Griffith, Pensacola Beach; her son, Michael J. Griffith and his wife, Cheryl Ann Young-Griffith, Pensacola; her granddaughter, Mary Charlene Young-Griffith, West Hollywood, California. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00pm Monday, August 22, 2011 at Pensacola Beach Community United Church of Christ, Pensacola Beach with Pastor Charles E. Randle (Ret) presiding. A reception in honor of Patricia follows immediately in the Parish Hall. Private graveside services for the family will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, Pensacola, Florida. Due to floral regulations at Barrancas National Cemetery, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to The Humane Society, 5 North Q St., Pensacola, FL 32505 or Pensacola Beach Community United Church of Christ, 920 Via De Luna Dr., Pensacola Beach, FL 32561 or to Joyce Goldenberg Inpatient Hospice Residence, 10075 Hillview Rd., Pensacola, FL 32514 or a charity of your choice.
